Magic, prostitution, immigration and the American Dream—not exactly the most obvious ingredients to mix together, but James Gray has done just that with "The Immigrant." His look at the experience and hardship of traveling through Ellis Island in the early 1900s forms the basis of his new movie, one that is opening overseas after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year. For those of us eager to see the movie for ourselves, this new clip will have to suffice for now.
The story centers on Ewa (Marion Cotillard), a Polish immigrant who winds up in the clutches of a sleazy pimp (Joaquin Phoenix). But arriving and hoping to save her is Orlando The Magician, played by an eye-shadow wearing Jeremy Renner. And in this scene he puts on a performance, getting into a coffin and that is fired upon with a gun. Does it impress the woman he's trying to woo? Well, you'll just have to watch and find out.
"The Immigrant" opens in France tomorrow and is still undated for the U.S., but is expected in early 2014.
