Watch: Mookie Returns In First Clip From Spike Lee's 'Red Hook Summer'

Even though he's not a major character in the film, and doesn't really play into the narrative as far as we know, it's probably a good marketing angle to feature Spike Lee's Mookie from "Do The Right Thing" in the first clip from the director's next effort, the indie flick "Red Hook Summer." But more intriguingly, this scene updates us on what's happened to him since he threw a trash can through the window at Sal's Pizzeria.

The sequence is structured as an interview, with Flick (played by Jules Brown), talking with the Brooklyn vet about what he's been doing the past twenty years. And it's a lot. Among the revelations, it seems things didn't work out with Tina (played by the fiery Rosie Perez) and he incited a riot that caused Sal's to be burned down. We guess he was forgiven after that whole incident and still worked there? As a whole, the scene seems a bit odd and maybe superfluous to a story about a young kid from Atlanta coming to Red Hook to stay with his grandfather for the summer, but it suggests that Lee wants to establish that these characters are living in the same thematic/narrative world as Mookie.

We'll see how this works in the context of the bigger picture when the film rolls out on August 10th. Check out the dates/theaters below to see when will arrive near you. [MTV]
