Watch: New Trailer For David O. Russell's 'American Hustle' Struts Its Stuff

Without any festival appearance or advance screenings for press, David O. Russell's "American Hustle" remains the biggest, most exciting mystery of the fall movie season. Awards player or chewy piece of entertainment? Maybe it's both?

We'll soon find out, and a brand-new trailer has landed today with an even grander look at the picture. You already know that this one is inspired by a true story, features a killer leading ensemble featuring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, and centers on a financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner-in-crime (Adams) who are forced to work with an out-of-control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters and politicians. But what is this actually like?

Take it with a pinch of salt, but a reader report over at AICN from a recent test screening says, "the film's resemblance to 'Boogie Nights' goes beyond the '70s backdrop and soundtrack; the story starts off light and poppy, making you feel the excitement of their swindles, but when the stakes get higher and higher, the darkness and tension starts to get thick enough to cut through with a knife" while also adding "this very well may be David O. Russell's masterpiece."  Again, be wary of hyperbole.

Either way, we'll find out when this opens on Christmas Day. Watch below.

Hey Playlist you're the experts, when a film is not on the festival circuit or having any press screenings doesn't that mean its not pushing for Oscars? Or does that not matter?

  • DG | October 10, 2013 4:18 PMReply

    Looks great

  • sola | October 10, 2013 1:23 PMReply

I laff at those saying Amy is the best thing about the trailer. Jlaw even impressed me more in her one scene than Amy. That's the bitter truth. Awesome trailer though and a good cast.

Brilliant trailer!. I'm absolutely loving Jennifer Lawrence as the disgruntled mother...she is amazing. Btw, the role was written for a trophy wife, early 30's and she's nailing it.

  • Marleyt | October 10, 2013 8:55 AMReply

Amy Adams does shine! I also agree with the Jennifer being too young for the role. I could pick at least 5 other actresses who would have been more appropriate for the role. I think it will be a great film for Bale and Adams, but overall it won't be a huge awards winner for O'Russell. . .

  • ali | October 10, 2013 8:12 AMReply

Amy Adams is the best thing in the trailer. Jennifer Lawrence is too young for her character. I didn't believe Bradley Cooper for one moment.

  • JOsh | October 10, 2013 6:19 AMReply

I've only ever liked O' Russell's movies, never loved them. Maybe this will be the one to change that? Looks like a must-see anyhow.

  • Daniel Delago | October 10, 2013 5:48 AMReply

David O. Russell is a genius. You cannot pigeonhole him into one neat genre. And not playing the film festival circuit (especially the crammed Toronto lineup this year) just intensifies the mystery and anticipation of seeing it in December.

  • serena | October 9, 2013 11:28 PMReply

It has a great cast going for it (though Jennifer Lawrence is clearly at once a great actress and far too young to play her character), yet the inability to pin down a coherent plot or tone in the marketing is making me skeptical.

  • bohmer | October 10, 2013 1:54 AM

this exactly what i thought... like exactly.

  • oogle monster | October 9, 2013 7:50 PMReply

AMY ADAMS is coming for that Oscar Cate!

  • xavi | October 9, 2013 7:24 PMReply

O.Russell most overrated director in Hollywood.

  • dan | October 19, 2013 2:59 PM

Troll really? I kinda agree with him, he is overrated. SLP is NOT a great film, The Fighter is pretty good but nothing astounding, I don't believe Russell has made a great film, yet.

  • Jack | October 9, 2013 7:30 PM

    Someone eliminate this troll!

  • marko | October 9, 2013 7:27 PM

I thought that honor went to Jason Reitman.

  • Stephen B | October 9, 2013 7:13 PMReply

Quick shot of Louis CK towards the end. Cool.

  • CB | October 9, 2013 7:00 PMReply

Christian Bale and David O. Russell, the new Robert De Niro/Martin Scorsese.

  • cary | October 10, 2013 12:33 PM

I can see Cooper and Lawrence do more films with Russell. Bale already has Nolan and Malick.

  • Mick | October 9, 2013 9:00 PM

    Or Nicolas Winding Refn/Ryan Gosling

  • cirkusfolk | October 9, 2013 7:43 PM

Uh no, that'd be Leonardo DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese.
