In an era when Richard Branson is ready to shoot people into space, we will say this about the old fashioned railroad: it's still pretty romantic. The countryside whipping by, the sound of the tracks, the recycled air....okay, maybe not everything about the experience will make hearts flutter but it's easy to see why Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth share an instant bond in "The Railway Man."
The first clip from the upcoming romantic wartime drama has arrived, and gets audiences ready for the relationship that will anchor the rest of the story. The movie tells the true life tale of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who endured unspeakable horror at the hands of the Japanese in a labor camp during World War II. Years later, he returns to confront his tormentor and make peace with this past with his wife by his side. Great material, but as our review from TIFF notes, the approach doesn't quite go as deep as one might hope.
Still, Kidman and Firth as a pair are pretty undeniable and do some good work in the film. "The Railway Man" opens on January 1, 2014 in the U.K. and it'll hit sometime in 2014 in the U.S. Watch below.
