Just over a year ago, Terrence Malick stunned concertgoers at the Austin City Limits festival by mixing with the crowd while shooting Christian Bale, who mingled with amongst performers that included Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine and Fleet Foxes. As we predicted, now that "official" production has started on the untitled movie (last year's shoot was said to be pre-production) formerly known as "Lawless," Malick returned to Austin with his cast and crew in tow once again offering up some of the more curious memories of the weekend.

First off, Rooney Mara took the stage to play guitar with punk upstarts Black Lips, with some of that footage captured below. Meanwhile, hanging around backstage, the actress joined her co-stars Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender in hanging out with Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine. And oh yeah, there were some rumors and sightings of Emma Stone in Austin as well, perhaps making some kind of appearance, though she hasn't been captured by any photographers just yet, but we'll keep an eye out.

Set against the music industry (duh), whatever Malick has brewing continues to be a total mystery. But it's an intriguing one nonetheless. And if the shoot for "Knight Of Cups" is anything to go by, he'll likely have more surprises in store before he decided to head to the editing room. [Fuse via /Film]

I think somewhere in the film Christian Bale enters a cocoon and comes out as Michael Fassbender.

I'm wondering who's gonna get cut...

I'm really curious about what happened with the casting on this film. Bale seemed to be the lead, based on first reports last year and the pre-production filming with Haley Bennett. But Malick's producers said last month that he only has a supporting part in this film, he's only been in Austin like a couple days so far, and Fassbender showed up out of nowhere and has been filming multiple scenes with all the other major stars for the past week. I guess anything can happen with Malick, but it does not look like Fassbender has a cameo or small supporting role.

Malick is well known for changing the focus of the story during shooting. In "The Thin Red Line" Adrian Brody's character was supposed to be the lead, and Brody went through shooting all of his scenes believing he was the lead. He later found out at the premiere that Malick had decided to change direction and his part had been reduced to a minor role with almost no actual screen time.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I confused the two projects.

Last year they said Christian Bale was the lead of 'Knight of Cups' and Ryan Gosling the lead of this film. Bale was always supporting.

There's not much to suggest Bale was the lead of this film, though. And I'd guess Fassbender has a supporting role, not necessarily small. The movie is about "two intersecting love triangles," so maybe it's an ensemble film like THE THIN RED LINE or something. Where there's no real lead.
