10 Essential Cinematic AntiheroesAn Oliver Stone crime-actioner starring Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, Emile Hirsch, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Demian Bichir, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek -- you'd think there would be a bit more excitement for "Savages" with the film set to hit theaters in just over a month. But on the marketing end, things have been fairly underwhelming.
But in an effort to drum up interest, Universal has dropped two new TV spots for the film which sees Kitsch and Johnson play two Laguna Beach drug dealers who find themselves in over the head with the Mexican cartel and see their shared love interest, played by Lively, kidnapped. The film is based on the Don Winslow novel of the same name with the villains in the piece probably the more exciting prospects with Del Toro as a cartel enforcer, Travolta as a DEA agent and Hayek as a cartel leader. Several interrogation style viral videos have landed, which you can check out below along with a couple more over at Complex and AskMen.
You can see where our hesitation might lie, though, as it looks about a 50-50 shot of being a fun pulpy pic or a run-of-the-mill actioner. We'll find out on July 6th. [JoBlo/Huffington Post/LA Confidential/Made Man]

I give Oliver Stone the benefit of the doubt. People can crap on him all they want but the fact of the matter is that most of his films are twice as good as the pure crap that comes out every week. I'm looking forward to this because it doesn't look like the usual PG-13 "action" fluff that constantly gets shoved down our throats. It looks bloody and brutal, which, when speaking about action movies these days, is rare. This will be the first movie I'll give my money to this summer.

It looks generic.

It's 'Savages' and the author is Don 'Winslow.' Just because it's not being hyper-promoted like the summer blockbusters/superhero movies doesn't mean this isn't making its mark in its own way.

I lean towards optimism, just because this doesn't look ponderous and pretentious, and Stone's only other setting is "completely insane".
