Watch: War Is On The Horizon In First Trailer For ‘The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies’

So, the final 'Hobbit' movie is coming. After six movies, director Peter Jackson will finally be done with his ‘Lord Of The Rings’ saga (or one assumes, anyhow). And so in this final movie, it’s kill the dragon Smaug and come home as heroes with fortunes in tow, right? Maybe not quite so fast. "People tend to forget what happens at the end of ‘The Hobbit,' " screenwriter/producer Philippa Boyens told USA Today. "They think of this little children's book. The rest of the story needs to be told, and it's pretty intense stuff."

What’s that “stuff” exactly? Well, it’s war, hence the third and final Hobbit film changing its title from the rather genteel sounding “There & Back Again” to the more heavy duty “The Battle Of The Five Armies.” As the stories go, *mild spoilers* in case you’ve never read that story or heard about the tale which is quite well-known in popular culture, Bilbo and his friends vanquish the dragon, but once they’ve reclaim their gold-filled mountain kingdom of Erebor, an army of Wargs and Goblins is there to greet them, and elves, men and dwarves have to band together to face them.

"It's very much a 'shock and awe' [campaign] by the enemy," Boyens said, "and it's pretty devastating." Well, yep, the new trailer for “The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies” has arrived and indeed, it’s pretty epic and massive.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ will be released worldwide on December 17th. Watch the trailer and check out the new posters below.
