With an eclectic cast that includes, among others, regular collaborator Denis Lavant, Eva Mendes and popstar Kylie Minogue, we were always intrigued with what Leos Carax had in store for us with the odd tale "Holy Motors." And we'll be honest, we've had images, clips and now a trailer but we're just as confused as ever.
Story centers on Monsieur Oscar, a mysterious figure who we follow for 24 hours in the day as he travels between different lives ranging from a murderer to a corporate executive to a monstrous creature. But is there anything more to all these wacky jobs he takes? Here's the full synopsis, courtesy of the official Cannes website;
From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man... He seems to be playing roles, plunging headlong into each part - but where are the cameras? Monsieur Oscar is alone, accompanied only by Céline, the slender blonde woman behind the wheel of the vast engine that transports him through and around Paris. He’s like a conscientious assassin moving from hit to hit. In pursuit of the beautiful gesture, the mysterious driving force, the women and the ghosts of past lives. But where is his true home, his family, his rest?
The film premiered last night on the Croisette and has already been earning positive reviews, which seemingly confirm that all the confusion does lead somewhere substantial (we'll have our own take on the film for you later on today). Watch the trailer below with a handful of new images as well. [Cannes]
