Watch: Robert Pattinson Is A Top Hat Wearing Man Whore In Trailer For 'Bel Ami'

While Twihards are probably still trying to compose themselves after yesterday's "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" presentation at Comic-Con, they may be dismayed after coming down from the high of the vampire franchise to see their beloved Edward playing such a relentless douchebag. But the trailer for the long-awaited period drama, "Bel Ami," is here and it finds Robert Pattinson tearing through women in high society London during Ye Olden Times.

Based on the book by Guy de Maupassant and joined by Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci, “Bel Ami” will find Pattinson playing George Duroy, a sexy social climber in turn-of-the-century 1890s Paris, who seduces his way to wealth and fame from a poor beginning. Thurman will play the wife of one of Duroy’s friends who eventually marries Pattinson’s seductive schemer. Kristin Scott Thomas will appear as a woman who overestimates Duroy’s attachment to her. Pattinson actually looks fine in the role, but the whole thing plays like an overcooked Harlequin romance writ large. Also, minus points to the trailer for using the most generic, overused music possible.

Earlier in the year Pattinson described his character as a "shit" and said overall, the film will be hard to market due to the general assholery of the fellow he plays. While we agree that George is certainly kind of a dick, the film should be fine marketing wise. It's a steamy period piece with a solid cast, so it will likely find an audience. No word on release dates yet, but we presume it will be somewhere on the TIFF schedule. Check out the trailer below. [via ONTD]

Yes, don't hate him because he's beautiful people. I look forward to seeing this film-- looks like a great cast. Meh, on the trailer music.

This trailer makes me want to see the film. Just wondering why when I click on Robert Pattinson's name, this story doesn't even show up in the list of articles he's in?

Someone needs to add this link to his name, it's relevant, ya know?

Bel Ami is not about romance -- it is about sex = power during this period of power-brokering in Paris. It is about how power corrupts, which is still relevant today, maybe more so. It is also about how the growing narcissism of this character gradually consumes the minimal conscience he has at the beginning of the story. A fascinating character study and Pattinson seems to have a handle on it if people will just give him an honest chance. It's the old -- "don't hate him because he's beautiful" or because women turn to goo at the sight or mention of him. Not his fault.

Interested because I know the book and think it does still have a lot of relevancy even today. But I agree that the trailer works overtime to sell it as a swoony, sex-filled epic. The story should have more edge to it than that. Hopefully, the film will even if the trailer doesn't.

Great cast, classic novel, gorgeous sets and costumes, intriguing protagonist and what looks like solid acting all the way around. It didn't look like a Harlequin romance at all. The director is an actor's director, and it shows even in a two minute trailer. Can't wait to see this, something for adults, not fanboys and hipsters.

I loved the trailer - including the music. I don't watch much TV nowadays - maybe that's why I hadn't heard any of it before. I thought it fitted perfectly. I can't fault Pattinson's voice or acting. From the self-conscious, embarrassed look on his face when his host rudely points out which cutlery to use, to his seething anger at the end, it looks like he did a brilliant job. I'm really looking forward to seeing the film now, so the trailer did its job!

    The trailer music is awful.
I just can`t take Robert Pattinson seriously as an actor.

It looks great! When Georges said "I'm going to ruin you!!" I really felt it.

Bel Ami is not a romance novel lol; quite the opposite, in fact. The trailer is good. I'm excited to see Robert Pattinson AND Colm Meaney together in this one. And Uma and Krristin Scott Thomas. Oh my.

i'm french and every french student read the book so here i'm so-so about the trailer( it doesn't look good and what happened to Thurman's face) : it's not "dangerous liaisons" or even "valmont"

Hmmm this looks interesting. Very good cast assembled here IMO, I think I spotted Colm Meaney, very underrated actor. I'll check this out when it's released.
