There's a storm coming, and it's the audiences who will be packing theaters and lining up around the block this weekend for "The Dark Knight Rises." By now, you likely already have your ticket, but if you don't, here's a little handy guide of where to go see the film in full, glorious IMAX with 70mm projection. But, wait -- why is this a big deal?
As you already know, Christopher Nolan is a big advocate of the large format, shooting some sequences in "The Dark Knight" that utilized the full scale and scope that IMAX screens have to offer. But with "The Dark Knight Rises" he's upped the ante, with about an hour of footage -- roughly a third of the running time -- going big and huge. And while the discussion of IMAX diluting their brand with their smaller, IMAX-branded theaters that are nothing like the experience of seeing it on a screen that is a true 72 feet high (let Aziz Ansari explain) is best left for another day, we're sorted out which ones offer the true, real deal screening room you'll be looking for. In short, if it's not 70mm, you're getting a 35mm or digital print.
As expected, "The Dark Knight Rises" is nothing short of a triumph -- read our spoiler-free review here -- and delivers the epic finale we've been long waiting for. So before you go this Friday, check out the list below and we'd recommend booking an IMAX ticket if there is a big screen anywhere near you. Theaters below and new photos via Entertainment Weekly on page two.

You can add -- the Regal Transit Theater in lancaster, NY (buffalo)

Rave Buckland Hills Imax, Manchester (New Haven) in Connecticut is not true IMAX! It is apart of the Rave Motion Pictures theater chain whose IMAX is fake IMAX. Don't be conned out of your money! I live in south-west Connecticut and the nearest theater that houses a true IMAX screen to me is just over the border in New Rochelle, New York; Regal New Roc IMAX. It's about an hour drive and it's completely worth it.

Can you confirm that the Regal Dublin is true 70mm film? I called them a few months ago about their IMAX screen, and they said it was digital. Could it be that they converted it back to film?

so i have a gripe. i realy whant to get see TDKR in 70mm but as im in the uk in the south my only option is to travel over 3 hours to london to see it. or scarifies the 70 for 35 and travel 2o min. why cant imax have more 70 mm sites its outrageous . the us prity much has at least 4 in each state and we in the uk have 4 across the whole country. i concede that the us is bigger and its probaly works out the same but i dont feel that way. is it worth traveling over 3 hours and spending twice the price of the imax ticket just to get there or just go to the local and miss out. ?

Not all IMAX digital is bad. I live in Baton Rouge and went to the Mall of Louisiana IMAX Digital to see The dark knight rises. At first I was worried because I heard IMAX digital was alot smaller than 70 mm. Nonetheless I walk in the theater and the screen was huge. I also went to the opry mills IMAX in Tennessee, and from what I remember the size of the 2 screens were pretty similar. It all depends on the specific theater.
SK | July 22, 2012 1:44 AM
You should warn people that some of the theatres listed are dome, and with the dome comes an EXTREMELY distorted image. I agree that this film should be seen in true IMAX, but the dome ones are no good for Hollywood features... like this one.

He should have just shot it in normal 70mm, or better yet, in MV48. True Imax installs are fairly rare to find in the world, but there are many times that number of conventional 70mm projectors still stored in theaters. And MV48, a 35mm standard with digital, liquid crystal and compressed air shutters, is such a cheap and quantum leap in film technology compared to Imax and these stupid digital installations. It's like, what, $15,000 for a MV 35mm projector head, and it makes ALL film reels look much better and reduces dirt and film damage over multiple playings compared to mechanical heads and shutters? And the cameras are no bigger than a standard 35mm one. Why are theaters, directors, and DPs not demanding this be the next standard instead of inferior digital or far out, expensive, and rarified Imax 15/70? Stupid.

Here's an accurate list of what is what format. "1570" on this list is true IMAX.
Can you remove Halifax, Nova Scotia from the list. They switched to Digital only about a year ago.
Everything else on the list is identified as "1570" and is "True IMAX"
John | July 18, 2012 7:12 PM
IMAX @ GLASGOW SCIENCE CENTRE is the real deal also.
Paul | July 18, 2012 5:05 AM
Santikos Palladium IMAX in San Antonio is NOT a real IMAX. Rivercenter IMAX is the only location in San Antonio to deliver the true IMAX experience (70mm) in town. Rivercenter IMAX showed the TDKR prologue before MI4 several months ago. I had to go to the Palladium IMAX in 2008 to watch TDK because the Rivercenter IMAX wasn't showing it. Check out their websites to see that the Rivercenter IMAX is ONLY real IMAX experience in San Antonio.

The Bayers Lake IMAX theatre in Halifax, Canada is no longer a 70mm IMAX theatre. It was converted to digital in June 2011.
Adam | July 17, 2012 6:00 PM
The CT location (which is in Manchester, CT -- not New Haven) is a LIEMAX.
Nick | July 17, 2012 12:12 PM
The Norwalk Aquarium in IMAX is 70mm -- and a great theater!
CyberG4 | July 17, 2012 1:24 AM
Sorry but the Scotiabank theatres in Edmonton and Calgary have been changed to digital projectors. Don't ask me why anyone would replace a beautiful 70mm IMAX projector for digital. Someone who obviously doesn't care about cinema I guess.

I don't think there are 15/70 imax thaeters in ohio. I looked up the imax at patriot park, and it looks like it is in columbus, georgia... not ohio. Damn

The following article: http://wearemoviegeeks.com/2011/04/ronnies-20-imax-goes-digital-this-friday-with-fast-five/ states that the Ronnie's Theater in St. Louis, MO is not real IMAX. The article says the screen has been converted to DIGITAL and that the screen is 30 feet tall by 55 feet wide.
Andrew | July 16, 2012 4:52 PM
Got my tickets to see it at Lincoln Center in NYC this Saturday. Super excited!
JM | July 16, 2012 4:04 PM
The Dark Knight Rises is not playing at the Telus World of Science in Edmonton. The only location it's available in IMAX(not true 70mm) is at the Scotiabank Theatre in West Edmonton Mall.
WRT | July 16, 2012 3:31 PM
The Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, VA is also showing it in 70mm IMAX. Check here: http://www.vasc.org/imax/showtimes_july20%20-%20July%2026.html
jd | July 16, 2012 2:48 PM
Hamilton 16 is not full-sized. The State Museum in downtown Indianapolis is the only full sized IMAX in Indiana.
whatt | July 16, 2012 2:23 PM
What about the whitaker center in harrisburg, pa? It's 65 ft tall isn't imax also 65mm?? Plus it was on this list to see the prologue on mission impossible 4 in true imax?
sjvp | July 16, 2012 1:21 PM
What about the Giant Screen in Birmingham Uk?
Dewsterling | July 16, 2012 1:00 PM
The Cannery Row theater is not IMAX. It's XD.
Retiree | July 16, 2012 12:59 PM
Monterey, CA's Cannery Row theater is Cinemark XD now. Isn't that the same as the "fake" IMAX Digital?
Mel | July 16, 2012 12:55 PM
Hamilton 16 IMAX in Noblesville, IN is 70mm, so should be a full-sized screen as well.
Alonso | July 16, 2012 12:51 PM
The New Orleans location isn't screening TDKR... it's an aquarium.
Will Dearborn | July 16, 2012 12:42 PM
The OMNI IMAX at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History *will* be screening The Dark Knight Rises in all it's 70mm glory. You should add it to the list. http://www.fwmuseum.org/
Ben | July 16, 2012 12:41 PM
Michigan list is also incorrect. RC (Rave Cinemas) Ann Arbor 20 is also a digital IMAX and therefore not a true 15/70.
The official website for the film seems to actually have a better list: http://www.thedarkknightrises.com/imax.html
J | July 16, 2012 12:29 PM
Wait, Austin - Bob Bullock. Is that not a 70mm display? I don't think this list is complete.
SydneyBlue120d | July 16, 2012 12:25 PM
Well, one of the largest screen in the world is in Italy, the famous Sala Energia at Arcadia Melzo
http://www.arcadiacinema.com/index.php?id_menu=32 boosting a 30mt X 16.50mt (nearly 500mq!) and is running a couple of stacked Christie 4K DLP Projectors. Personally I'd prefer a Sony SXRD 4K screen however: While much smaller, the image quality is much better than DLP or 70mm.
swell | July 16, 2012 12:16 PM
Wichita claims to have the largest IMAX in the country, but it's digital. So, if the digital "print" is pulled from a 70 mm source, why is it getting short shrift from Nolan and Co. (the 8 minute preview from several months didnt screen here)? Actual question, if you have the time. Is the image fidelity really taking a shot? A quick google search will show its not exactly a "baby IMAX"... http://www.bizjournals.com/wichita/print-edition/2010/12/24/worlds-largest-imax-screen-well-maybe.html
gaston213 | July 16, 2012 12:16 PM
You should also add the Bob Bullock IMAX in Austin. It's a true 70mm IMAX (the only real IMAX in Austin)
I only point that out because they have almost stopped running remastered 35mm "IMAX experience" films because AMC and Regal's fake imax screens have cannibalized their business.

Sean Young | July 16, 2012 12:02 PM
You can add Regal Opry Mills 20 & IMAX - Nashville TN to that list.
Matt | July 16, 2012 11:58 AM
The Bob Bullock IMAX Theater in Austin, Texas will be playing this in 70mm IMAX.
Bryant | July 16, 2012 11:57 AM
I take that back -- New Rochelle may be for real. Apologies to the good people of New Rochelle, as I've never been to your IMAX Theater.
John Kinsella | July 16, 2012 11:57 AM
No MD, VA, or DC? WTF?
Bryant | July 16, 2012 11:53 AM
Yeah, this list is no good. Neither of the two theaters listed in Westchester County (White Plains, NY and New Rochelle, NY) is 15/70 IMAX, although the one right across the Hudson in West Nyack is the real deal.
John | July 16, 2012 11:51 AM
you're actually wrong on your Pennsylvania list. The Tarentum IMAX is Fake-IMAX. The screen was converted to IMAX digital on 3/11/2011. so this is fake IMAX.
J. Warner | July 16, 2012 11:51 AM
... Wait, Oregon doesn't have one true, full-size IMAX screen?
