“Juno” may have been the film that announced Diablo Cody as a screenwriter to be reckoned with, but by then she’d already penned a bunch of scripts that she believed would probably never see the light of day. One of those scripts, “Time and a Half,” a Gen X inspired satire of modern day hipsters which Cody described as “a generational, working stiffs kind of comedy” now looks dead certain to make it to the big screen. Cody sold the script some time ago and hasn't touched it since, telling us last year "they hired somebody to rewrite it at some point and, I didn't really want to work on it anymore" but it’s unlikely that will stop the film, which has just secured its lead actress, from being marketed as a Diablo Cody flick.

The Oscars, remember those? It all seems like a distant memory now, and it's hard to believe it was just a couple of weeks ago that we were sitting down in extra stretchy pants with some beer and unhealthy snack food to watch the annual Super Bowl for the movies. And while time will tell what the lasting impression from this year's ceremonies will be, debates will continue about who missed out and who should have won.

Diablo Cody is a bit of maverick around Hollywood circles so it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that she's set to tackle her directorial debut on a project formerly titled "Lamb Of God" with an eclectic cast in tow, including Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer, Holly Hunter and Nick Offerman. There's now one more addition to the line up in the form of former "Last Comic Standing" finalist Sarah Colonna.

Diablo Cody Says The Lack Of Women In Creative Positions In Hollywood Is "Deeply Depressing"

Diablo Cody is depressed about the Oscar nominations. Not just because her screenplay for "Young Adult" was snubbed -- she already has one statuette at home for "Juno" -- but more so because she wasn't the only woman overlooked this year. Only three were nominated as screenwriters -- Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig for "Bridesmaids," and the late Bridget O'Connor as co-writer of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" -- and none were nominated for Best Director. (Although a few films helmed by women scored nods in other categories: Agnieska Holland's "In Darkness" in Best Foreign Language Film, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" in Animated Film).

Diablo Cody has spent the last few months doing the circuit with Jason Reitman's "Young Adult," and along the way she talked up "The Evil Dead" remake that she recently gave a polish to, as well as the long-developing "Sweet Valley High." What we learned over the past little while is that the adaptation of popular series of tween books will go into "hard R" territory in a picture that Cody said she hopes will be an "American Graffiti" for the '80s. So perhaps we should have seen this next bit coming.

Scorecards will be adjusted and awards prognosticator types will have to adjust their bets, as the WGA have revealed their nominees for their annual awards. Why do we care? The guilds have traditionally been the best augurs for how the Oscar nominees will take shape, mostly because these are the same folks who will be sending in ballots to the Academy. Let's start with the surprises.

Diablo Cody Talks the Inspiration for 'Young Adult,' Working With Jason Reitman & Preparing For 'Lamb Of God'

Writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman are quite the pair. After teaming on the beloved small-scale dramatic comedy (or comedic drama?) "Juno," which won the first-time writer Cody an Academy Award, they collaborated on teen horror romp "Jennifer's Body," a Cody script that Reitman produced. They are back together again on the darkly tinged comedy "Young Adult," opening this week in limited release before going wide next week. In "Young Adult" the unstoppably sexy Charlize Theron gets considerably uglier (inside if not out) as a young adult novelist named Mavis who returns to her hometown to woo her former high school flame. It's funny, occasionally quite difficult stuff, and is made all the more special by Cody's oddly heartfelt portrait of longing and obsession. We got to talk to Diablo Cody about the inspiration for the script, her own directorial effort, and her nervousness about bringing a character like Mavis to the multiplexes.
