Inside Llewyn Davis
Like most A-list directors, Steven Spielberg has a habit of attaching himself to projects he’ll likely never get around to making (fun fact: Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming “Interstellar” started life as a Spielberg project ) so when the legendary filmmaker began circling a Tom Hanks-starring Cold War thriller, we didn’t really give it much stock despite the shared history between the two. While we questioned whether the untitled film would “survive the development process,” DreamWorks has decided to directly challenge our cynicism and you’re going to want to sit down for this.

Coen Brothers retro
Are Joel & Ethan Coen the best American filmmakers of their generation? It's probably a silly question to pose, but we'll be damned if we can think of better candidates. Since their startling neo-noir debut "Blood Simple" (which turns three decades old next year), they've been behind a brace of firmly original pictures which couldn't have been made by anyone else (as every dire attempt by others to make a "Coens-esque" imitation has proven). And though there have been a few blips (most notably a patch in the mid 00s generally regarded as the duo being off their game, though the films have their defenders), they've kept up a remarkably consistent level of quality over the years, with multiple classics, of which their 16th film, "Inside Llewyn Davis," is only the latest.

As a director working with a studio for the first time, how do you know that everyone is fully behind you? Well, if you’re Angelina Jolie then you know you’re doing well when you land a pair of some of the greatest American writers (and directors) working today to write your script for you. THR is reporting that the Oscar-winning Coen Brothers -- and yes, the real ones, not the writers of “Garfield” -- have been tapped by Universal to rewrite “Unbroken.”

Of all the genres to try and pull off, the romantic caper flick -- think "To Catch A Thief," or "Charade," or even "Ocean's Eleven" -- is one of the trickiest. For such a film to work out, it's got to be as light as a feather and feel entirely effortless, and all too many films aiming to hit that sweet spot end up feel entirely effort-ful. But if anyone feels like they might be suited to that sort of thing, it would be the Coen Brothers, who penned the script for the remake of a minor classic of the genre, the 1966 Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine film "Gambit." Have they pulled off?
