Gareth Edwards, Star Wars
Another day, another "Star Wars" rumor, but one that, if it turns out to be true, would throw an interesting twist into the developing details over the grand Disney plan over the next few years. At this point, we know that "Episode VII" is coming out at Christmas 2015, with at least "Episode VIII" and "Episode IX." to follow at some stage. We also know that "Godzilla" director Gareth Edwards is directing the first of the stand-alone spin-off movies, to be written by "The Book Of Eli"'s Gary Whitta, and scheduled for release in December 2016, and that "Chronicle" and "Fantastic Four" helmer Josh Trank will do another spin-off at some point after that.

Godzilla
After his film “Godzilla” raked in $93 million at the box office this past weekend, you can bet director Gareth Edwards is having a good week. The film’s not only a financial success thus far, but it’s received approval from the majority of critics as well. And as part of New York Times’s regular feature, Anatomy of a Scene, the director recently got a chance to speak in great detail about a sequence from “Godzilla” that he appears to be particularly proud of.

Ever since it was unveiled back in 2010, there's been talk of a possible sequel to "Monsters." And that's hardly a surprise: while Gareth Edwards' film wasn't a giant success, it made a very decent $5 million worldwide (plus much more on home video formats), which is an unqualified success for a film made on a miniscule budget.

Legendary Pictures' expensive "Godzilla" reboot has been having a rough time in the public eye of late. It's scheduled to go into production soon, but the production company is embroiled in two lawsuits; one with the producers Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Doug Davison who claim they are being booted from the monster movie by Legendary. It's near the 11th hour too and "The Shawshank Redemption," "Walking Dead" writer/director Frank Darabont was brought on board to do a final rewrite on the movie. And then there's the actors who have publicly passed on the lead role, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and others who have evidently been offered the lead (Aaron Johnson) who haven't responded in almost a month (our guess is Johnson also passed). So, is "Godzilla" in trouble? Or is it just business as usual with tentpoles that seem to put the horse before the cart these days?

Director Gareth Edwards could not be on a better run right now. With "Monsters" impressing folks on both sides of the ocean, the helmer is executive producing a sequel to the flick and he's landed the director's chair of the mother of all creature features, "Godzilla."

Gareth Edwards had a pretty big 2010. His low-budget, and very clever alien invasion flick "Monsters" turned out to be a genre hit and his calling card to Hollywood, allowing him to bag the director's chair for the upcoming "Godzilla" redo. "Monsters" has also made a star out of one of it's leads, Scoot McNairy who has Andrew Dominik's "Cogan's Trade" and Ben Affleck's "Argo" on his calendar. And while a "Monsters" sequel is moving ahead with Edwards producing, he's got another original idea for a movie that he wants to bring to the big screen.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are gearing up to launch a new "Godzilla" picture, but everything's been quiet in regards to development, despite a 2012 release date already planned. Quiet no more! Gareth Edwards, the talented helmer of "Monsters" is now the new man for the job, entrusted with bringing the Toho titan back to the big screen.
