The list of Guillermo Del Toro produced films long ago surpassed the levels of being absurd and comically long but what the hell, he's just added another one but unlike the myriad of other projects in various stages of development this one has a pretty big name already attached.

While Guillermo Del Toro is still no stranger to facing hurdles in getting his films made -- his participation in "The Hobbit" was stalled out by the endless financial woes of MGM and more recently, his R-rated take of "At The Mountains Of Madness" was killed by a nervous Universal -- those are probably cakewalks between dealing with Bob Weinstein on his sophomore feature film "Mimic."

Comic-Con is nearly upon us: we're only two weeks away from the descent of the geek world on their San Diegan Mecca, although many have been worried, considering Marvel's decision to skip Hall H this year, that there wouldn't be much worth going for. But Legendary Pictures, backers of "The Dark Knight," "300" and "Clash of the Titans," have announced that they're taking four big projects to the Coachella of sci-fi/fantasy, and the press release is unusual for two reasons: firstly (and more on this shortly) not an inch of film will have been shot on any of the four, and secondly, because they've left slip a major piece of casting on the most imminent.

The fall of Guillermo Del Toro's attempted James Cameron-produced adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountain Of Madness" has been somewhat redeemed by the helmer's gestating monster-flick "Pacific Rim," which now has Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and Idris Elba all set to star, but if we got anything out of his interview with Deadline, it's probably the fact he's still not sure what went awry.

Guillermo del Toro might be distinguishable to many for his rotund physique, but he’s better known these days, production-wise at least, for stretching himself too thin. Since his last film -- 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” -- he famously hotfooted it from “The Hobbit” over a year ago, citing production delays even before MGM declared bankruptcy, though he’s yet to get started on a new project, even as Peter Jackson’s two-part epic began production earlier in the year. Conventional logic would dictate that del Toro’s long overdue for getting a Spanish-language “one for me” out of his system along the lines of “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth”, but he tells The LA Times he’d seriously consider taking on Disney’s revisionist fairy tale “Maleficent” that’s been shopped around since 2009, usually with Angelina Jolie in consideration for the lead role, if the studio asked him. “Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting”, del Toro assures us. Wait, what? Aren’t you meant to be getting ready to make “Pacific Rim”?

Last year's "Shrek Forever After" was billed as the "final chapter" in the DreamWorks fairytale franchise, but with the four films grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide between them ("Shrek 2" remains the fifth biggest domestic grosser), the likelihood of Katzenberg & Co leaving the series alone was minimal. And so, barely 18 months after the fourth "Shrek," we'll see "Puss In Boots," a spin-off focusing on the Zorro-esque kitty voiced by Antonio Banderas in the second, third and fourth films.

Guillermo Del Toro Announced As Guest Director, Will Premiere "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark'Considering it's the world center of the movie industry, it's surprising that historically speaking, Los Angeles never really had a film festival to rival the likes of Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Guillermo Del Toro hasn't had the best run of luck in recent years. The Oscar-nominated "Pan's Labyrinth" might have catapulted him onto the A-list after years of developing a burgeoning cult, but he hasn't made a film since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." The Mexican director spent years on "The Hobbit" before leaving the project last summer due to frustrations over delays, and the financial uncertainty of MGM, while his pet project, the $150 million R-rated H.P. Lovecraft adaptation "At The Mountains Of Madness" was scrapped by Universal when a compromise couldn't be reached on the film's rating, despite the presence of James Cameron as producer, and Tom Cruise as the mooted star.

Update: Travis Beacham has once again hit Twitter and has put the kibosh on the rumors swirling saying, "The situation in Japan is NOT tripping up PAC/RIM. Unless my day-to-day work load is an astonishingly elaborate prank." He also adds for those concerned about the film being insensitive, "This is, on its surface and in its heart, a movie about people. This is a movie about humanity."

It's not the first time, even within recent memory, that world events have overshadowed the silly little movies that we write about, but given the terrible events in Japan and the Pacific overnight, which are still ongoing, Guillermo Del Toro's new project "Pacific Rim" is looking like a rather less carefree proposition than it did when it was formally announced at the start of the week.
