Universal Balking At R-Rating & $150 Million Price Tag; Tom Cruise Not Confirmed For RoleIt's been a long, hard road for Guillermo Del Toro for the past few years. He held on as long as he could with "The Hobbit" before the constant delays eventually forced his hand to get out and moving on to something else. That salvation appeared to be in the form of "At The Mountains Of Madness," the director's longtime passion project, an adaptation of the novel by H.P. Lovecraft. It seemed to be moving forward as his next gig with James Cameron producing, and Universal reacting very positively to pre-production visuals presented to suits, and moreover, the ambitious project was set to come in at the approved $150 million budget. But it appears the studio isn't quite ready to pull the trigger on an R-rated horror big budget horror film.

Lists are subjective. That's the joy of them, to some degree -- you get to see the tastes of others, and hopefully pick up a few tips for things you may have overlooked. And you're never going to find a list that you agree with 100%, particularly when the stakes are bigger -- lists of 'greatest films' or 'greatest directors' are a veritable minefield of disputes and feuds. But that doesn't change the fact that some lists are just dumb.

At last year's San Diego Comic-Con, among the many projects announced by Guillermo del Toro was a stop-motion animated "Pinocchio" with Gris Grimley animating and -- awesomely -- Nick Cave doing the music. Considering the director generally has about a zillion films -- writing, producing or directing -- on his plate, we figured it would be a while before we heard anything further. Guess we were wrong.

Ah, "Memento." The sophomore feature of a filmmaker that, for better or worse, continues to work in Hollywood with mainstream appeal, while he, as Guillermo del Toro puts it, manages to "still remain strange." Beginning with "Memento" and now with the Oscar-nominated, "Inception" Christopher Nolan's films always seem to leave us scratching our heads -- but he, and we, wouldn't have it any other way.

The Director Also Talks About What Would Have Been His Version Of 'The Hobbit' & More In Massive New Yorker TomeIf you haven't heard by now there's a massive dissertation-sized profile piece on filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro in the latest issue of the New Yorker. A fascinating read, the story, penned by Daniel Zalewski, touches on all facets of the 46-year-old filmmaker's life, from his obsession with monsters and macabre expertise in human and animal anatomy that started as a child growing up in Mexico; to his struggles with weight, his painful experiences on leaving "The Hobbit" and his Sisyphean task of bringing "At The Mountains Of Madness" to the big screen. The profile is about 20 pages long printed out and it's a full meal to digest to say the least. Touching upon "Frankenstein," to “Saturn and the End of Days,” the article doesn't even mention half the myriad projects Del Toro is working on, but one does get the sense from that filmmaker almost has too many irons in the fire and wants to make six movies at once. You're likely too busy surfing the web on your lunch break to read it all, but this is why you've got us to parse the most interesting need-to-know greatest hits of the profile.

Despite being rumored to be in a showdown with Tom Cruise for the lead role in Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountain Of Madness" and even being touted as the early studio favorite, James McAvoy has now revealed he's heard nothing regarding the Del Toro project let alone anything about an offer to take the lead role of Dyer.
