Maybe it's our fault for watching too many late-night talk shows in the late 1990s (to be fair this writer was in his pre-teens, and also on the wrong continent) but we'd never in a million years have thought that Harmony Korine, the one-time enfant terrible of the independent world as the writer of "Kids" and director of "Gummo" and "Julien Donkey-Boy," would be a popular figure on the late-night circuit.

Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" is a hit in limited release. In fact, the girls gone wild meets Korine's enfante terrible aesthetics flick, posted the biggest limited release of 2013 thus far — a per-theater average $90,000 making it the the 10th-highest average ever for a live-action film in limited release. Not too shabby. And while 'Breakers' opens in wide release this weekend via A24 pictures, Korine is already shoring up his next project.

For the past few months we've been eating a steady diet of awards season fare, glossy blockbusters and studio throwaways. But soon the Oscars will be over, and we'll be needing some kind of cinematic release. So, it's a good thing that Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" is right around the corner, and it's an even better thing that it looks brilliantly bonkers.

Emma Roberts Co-Stars; Also, WTFUpdate: Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are also in talks to star. The trio will play the gang of girls in the film with Roberts as danger loving Southern brunette, and Gomez as the stuck-up, religious type.

Jan Kwiecinski & Alexei Fedorchenko Join Harmony Korine In Forthcoming OmnibusIt has already been a busy year for Harmony Korine but his calendar keeps filling up further, and that's just fine by us. He's teamed with James Franco on some kind of street gang project, premiered his short film collaboration with Die Antwoord "Umshini Wam," created an ad for Indian megacorp Mahindra, and is working on a short film with Val Kilmer that will form part of a Dogme-esque omnibus film. We'll have more on that in a second, but it appears there is yet another project Korine has been working on.

Will Be One Part Of An International Anthology Film Produced By Vice FilmsWhen we first learned that Harmony Korine was teaming up with Val Kilmer for a mysterious Nashville-set project about a motivational speaker it seemed like a match made in Awesome Heaven. As it seems with most Korine projects these days, it's been flying under the radar moving to its own, probably bizarro, beat, but it seems there is much much more to this already idiosyncratic undertaking.

Say what you will about Harmony Korine, but there is probably no other contemporary American director who so steadfastly sticks to his vision without compromise. Even this lone attempt at more "mainstream" filmmaking "Mister Lonely" was imbued with Korine's signature moments of radiant brilliance: the nuns falling out of the plane to Aphex Twin? The lovely slo-mo opening? After last year's delightfully twisted "Trash Humpers," 2011 has seen Korine busier than ever. He hit SXSW this spring with his Die Antwoord starring short film "Umshini Wam" and he's also doing some kind of mysterious kids-in-bike-gangs project with James Franco. There hasn't been word on his next feature "Twinkle Twinkle" since Marlon Wayans signed on last fall (let's hope it's still happening) but the ever creative Korine is already at work on something else that's totally amazing and totally bizarre.

We Hope SoThe problem with being on the outer fringes of the cinema world doing your own freaky thing is that it's a fine line between being interesting and bizarre and just plain predictable and bizarre. But leave it to Harmony Korine, we never know what that guy is gonna do next, and he always seems to keep it fresh. His latest effort, the Die Antwoord short film "Umshini Wam" delighted us at SXSW. But the ever busy director is already on to his next thing, and it's teaming with actor/artist/soap opera star/writer/teacher/philosopher James Franco on a mysterious street gangs project.

Franco Also Options 'Zeroville' As Yet Another Potential Directorial GigJames Franco. Actor, director, student, artist, teacher...he's a modern renaissance man and though he's teetering on the edge of overexposure, you gotta kind of love an Oscar nominee who also dabbles in soap operas. And while at times it may seem he's just yanking on the chain of the industry that feeds his stomach, Franco does seem to have a sincere interest in truly artistic endeavors, so when we heard that he was going to be working with Harmony Korine, it made a lot of sense in a way.
