Back in 2003, people were surprised when Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, writers of “Cats & Dogs,” followed up that piece of fluff with the smart and filthy “Bad Santa.” Ficarra and Requa have gone to direct “I Love You Philip Morris” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and nobody talks about "Cats & Dogs" anymore. Then are there are people like Jay Scherick and David Ronn, a couple of writers who have willfully doled out garbage for more than a decade. From “Serving Sara” to “I, Spy” and “Guess Who,” the only team that can touch these trash men is Friedberg & Seltzer (“Date Movie,” “Meet the Spartans”). We always hold out hope that such Hollywood hacks have a secret remorse for their cinematic sins, but what’s much more likely is that they just shrug it off and say, “We do it for the fans.” And by "fans" they mean unsuspecting patrons who don’t read reviews.
