Sometimes, a familiar story well told is more than enough, and that seems to be the case with Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back." Premiering at Sundance in January where it was quickly snapped up in a big deal, our man on the ground called it "a crowd pleaser...that entertains and still has a personal stamp." And judging by the first trailer, it seems that's about spot on.

Sundance Hit 'The Way Way Back' Starring Steve Carell Dated For July 5th

There were plenty of breakout hits from the 2013 Sundance Festival earlier this year, but the one bought for the most money because of its potential mainstream appeal was "The Way Way Back." Starring Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry and more, the film was the directorial debut of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the writers of "The Descendants" which won a Best Adapted Screenplay award in 2012. Off a relatively small budget, "The Descendants" went on to gross $177 million worldwide for Fox Searchlight, so when the same studio saw Faxon and Rash's latetest effort, they jumped at the chance to distribute it, putting their money where their mouth was with a hefty sum of money ($10 million reportedly).

'The Way, Way Back' Team Jim Rash & Nat Faxon Developing Drama At Fox Searchlight

One was the star of the recently cancelled sitcom “Ben and Kate,” while the other plays the sene-stealing Dean Pelton on “Community,” but together Jim Rash and Nat Faxon are the Academy Award-winning screenwriting duo behind “The Descendents.” The pair also recently hit Sundance to premiere their directorial debut (which they also wrote, exec-produced and starred in) “The Way, Way Back” (our review here) featuring Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette and Steve Carell, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight in one of the festival’s biggest acquistions. Unsurprisingly Fox Searchlight wants to stay in the Rash-Faxon business, and they’ve acquired an untitled pitch from the pair.

Back in 2012, “The Descendants” took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and most people were probably surprised to see Alexander Payne (a previous winner for “Sideways” and nominee for “Election”) flanked by Dean Pelton from “Community” and that dude from “Club Dredd.” For the first time in Payne’s career he had not collaborated with his usual co-writer Jim Taylor, but instead rewritten a previously existing screenplay by the aforementioned Jim Rash and Nat Faxon (which was in itself an adaptation of a novel).

It's generally agreed that television is as good as it's ever been. Of course, there's a lot of rubbish on, as there always was, but virtually every night, year round, brings more quality comedy and drama than you could possibly hope to watch. The next few weeks alone bring the return of "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones," two of the most acclaimed cable dramas of recent years, while "Justified" and "Luck," muscular, cinematic long-form tales as strong as anything the big screen has seen recently, wrap up their seasons, and other favorites like "Breaking Bad," "Louie" and "Homeland" will be back before the year is out, along, we hope, with a raft of excellent new shows.

Winning an Oscar Sunday night for Best Adapted Screenplay, for an acclaimed film directed by Alexander Payne and starring ultimate modern movie star George Clooney, probably sounds a lot better in meetings than being the two guys who play outrageous character parts on shows like “Community” and “Party Down.” As much as we appreciate Jim Rash’s role as Dean Pelton, along with his frequently hilarious writing partner Nat Faxon’s appearance in Broken Lizard comedies, something about being fresh off an Oscar win for adapting “The Descendants” for the big screen has done wonders for both gentlemen’s careers.
