The Quiet Ones
It used to be that you knew what you were going to get if you were watching a new horror movie produced by the British studio Hammer. Back in the '50s, '60s and '70s, Hammer was responsible for a string of successfully stylish scary movies, many of them starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. These were movies that were known for their emphasized artificiality and outrageousness—they were theatrical, provocative and bold; much sexier, funnier, and more colorful than their stateside cousins. So it's even more disappointing that Hammer's new movie, "The Quiet Ones," the latest in a handful of releases the company has put out since their reorganization in 2007, is so drab and flavorless.

To those who have been paying attention, Cate Blanchett has had her eye on the director's chair. She was originally slated to direct a short in the Australian omnibus "The Turning," before she just decided to take a role in the film instead. However, instead of testing the waters with a small segment first, Blanchett is diving right in, and has lined up a feature to kick off her career behind the camera.

The project has been gestating for a number of years, but it looks like things are really moving forward with “Love & Mercy,” the biopic on Brian Wilson. This past January, Paul Dano signed on to play Wilson as a young man. Now, John Cusack is in discussions to play the older version of the legendary Beach Boys frontman.

It's a peculiar day when a revenge flick comes down the pipeline and a grizzled older thespian unleashes in his genre, but in the case of Phillip Noyce's latest directorial effort, fresh-faced and Cameron-approved is the order of the day.

At this point, Paul Dano has accomplished a lot in his still-young career. He's logged time with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson and Ang Lee, starred in strong indie comedies like "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Ruby Sparks," gone the blockbuster route with "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Knight And Day," and last year, he dipped his toe into heady sci-fi with Rian Johnson's "Looper." From to drama to romance to comedy, he's done it all (except maybe horror), but now he's tasked with the tremendous responsibility of playing one of music history's most beloved and influential writers and performers.

In early 2010 we reported that writer/director Oren Moverman — who directed "The Messenger" and the upcoming police drama "Rampart" starring Woody Harrelson — was working on an adaptation of William S. Burroughs' "Queer" and staged a test-drive reading of the screenplay at the Sarasota Film Festival that spring. Evidently he was doing a solid for his friend Steve Buscemi (who cameos in both of Moverman's pictures) who would direct and produce the adaptation.

Film Will Hit NY & L.A. For One Oscar Qualifying Week & Will Reopen In Platform Release On January 27Largely known so far for straight to DVD/VOD fare ("Trespass," "Blitz" "Shadows and Lies" with James Franco) and some theatrical releases, (Chris Evans' "Puncture") Millennium Entertainment might seem, on the outside, like a strange fit for "Rampart," Oren Moverman's cop drama and follow-up to excellent 2009 film, “The Messenger.” But as the recent acquisition of Richard Linklater's black comedy, "Bernie" suggests, the company is in the middle of a rebranding strategy, and moving away from B-movie fare.

It's like the movie gods have decided that us mere mortals are deserving of some good news today. First, of course, there was Werner Herzog joining Tom Cruise's "One Shot" and now one of our favorite writer/directors is pairing up with a solid actor to take on the life of a legendary Hollywood figure.

At its TIFF premiere earlier this month, Oren Moverman's police drama "Rampart" was applauded by critics all round with lead actor Woody Harrelson, in particular, earning praise for his performance as Dave "Date Rape" Brown (not kidding), a corrupt cop caught in the '90's L.A.P.D. scandal where the film derives its name.
