As we patiently await David Fincher's next feature to get the pieces put in place, he's been doing just fine for the moment over in TV land. "House Of Cards," which he executive produced and directed the first two episodes for, kicked off the year by not only revolutionizing how new shows are brought to market, but by also being just a top tier political drama. Critics and audiences were both taken by it, and a second season is on the way (though Fincher may not be directing), and it seems there's another British TV show he wants to bring to American audiences.

It's been one of the most exciting and unpredictable award seasons in memory; a rich, diverse field of contenders, almost all of which are very good, and for the longest time it seemed like almost any of them could have taken the Best Picture award at the Oscars. But in the last couple of weeks, the narrative's starting to become a little narrower, with one film dominating the guild awards, which are traditionally the best precursors to the Academy Awards – Ben Affleck's terrific "Argo."

Jumping in as a new distributor into a circuit where the big dogs -- the Paramounts, the 20th Century Foxs, the Warner Bros.s, the Universals -- have been up and running for the best part of a century, can't be easy. The most recent start-ups, Summit and CBS Films, have had mixed success, the former might have a mega-franchise in the "Twilight" series, but are still finding their feet outside it, while the latter are yet to have a box office hit in their first year of operation. But FilmDistrict, the shiniest, newest company in town, have managed to come out of the blocks in a fairly impressive way.

We're feeling optimistic about 2011, for a number of reasons. One of the principle reasons is that filming is now underway in Louisiana on "Looper," the long-awaited third film from Rian Johnson. Johnson made one of the great debut films of the Noughties with "Brick," and his follow-up, "The Brothers Bloom," while more divisive, is, in the view of this writer, a charming, inventive con-man piece, and continued to demonstrate, along with some sterling recent TV work on "Terriers" and "Breaking Bad," that Johnson was potentially one of the most exciting filmmakers of his generation.
