Last fall, a project burbled up to the surface entitled "College Republicans." Penned by Wes Jones -- and making the 2010 Black List of best unproduced screenplays -- the project was gaining some heat with Richard Linklater rumored for the director's chair and Shia LaBeouf apparently sniffing around the lead role. Well, nearly a year has passed and the film is coming together with a few changes to the lineup.

Meet Bernie: a man who has truly found his place in this world as an assistant funeral director and beloved member of the community in the small Texas town of Carthage. Soft spoken with an arguably effeminate Southern accent, of a round stature but always with admirable posture, Bernie Tiede is a gentleman. And a murderer. But the town of Carthage would really just like you to know that he is a gentleman.

Says 'Dazed & Confused' Spiritual Sequel 'That's What I'm Talking About' Will Feature New Batch Of CharactersLast night, Richard Linklater hit the Los Angeles Film Festival to unveil his latest film, the black comedy "Bernie." We caught up with Linklater on the red carpet and while comparisons to "Fargo" have been thrown around, he told us he doesn't understand where those parallels are coming from (he actually was the one who first mentioned any similarities to the Coen brothers film) and the only connecting tissue is that they are both based on true crime stories (well, actually, "Fargo" isn't). Anyway, the film stars Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine and centers on the titular character (Black), a beloved mortician in small Texas town who befriends a mean old widow (MacLaine) and commits a horrific crime. And while you'll just have to wait a moment to get our thoughts on the film, Linklater did talk about a couple long gestating projects he has in the works.

Richard Linklater is certainly no stranger to mainstream fare. "School Of Rock," "Bad News Bears" and "The Newton Boys" were journeys into major studio filmmaking (and let's not forget, "Dazed & Confused" was also a major studio project for Universal made at a time when the majors were toying with indie talent) but none of those are as big as what the helmer is circling right now.
