Bruce Willis had a pretty great 2012, all things considered. There were disappointments, to be sure: ill-conceived Henry Cavill vehicle "The Cold Light Of Day," Stephen Frears' tone-deaf "Lay The Favorite," a brief role in "The Expendables 2" and a straight-to-video picture called "Fire With Fire" alongside Josh Duhamel. But those weaknesses were certainly overshadowed by his far more visible strengths, with the actor giving two of his best performances in years, in Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" and Rian Johnson's "Looper," the latter of which Willis has described as the best film he's ever been in.

Robert Rodriguez has been really, really busy. But that’s nothing new for the writer/director/producer, and that seems to be the way he likes it. In addition to the 11 features he’s directed since first turning heads with his low budget classic “El Mariachi” (financed largely by Rodriguez’ willingness to submit himself to medical experimentations), Rodriguez has generally had his hands in just about every other area of filmmaking imaginable: writing, editing, producing, doing DP work, composing music and, we’re betting, handling grip and best boy duties at some point too.

Long before Jon Favreau figured out how to effectively exploit the comic-reading crowd in San Diego, Robert Rodriguez was one of the kings of Comic-Con. The genre filmmaker was responsible for the Mexi-western "Desperado," robbers and vampires genre mashup "From Dusk 'Till Dawn" and most importantly "Sin City," his panel-for-panel adaptation of the Frank Miller comic series. That 2005 film led the way for more slavish and stylized comic adaptations like "300" and "Watchmen" and showed audiences that you could make a comic book film look just like the comic book. But after his 2007 double-feature experiment with Quentin Tarantino "Grindhouse" sunk like a stone at the box office, he's been relatively quiet. Between "Sin City" and "Grindhouse" he made the kids flick "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D" which seemed to be a natural extension of his "Spy Kids" franchise, followed this up with another kids film "Shorts," about a magical wish-granting rock and he had a co-director credit on "Machete", one of his "Grindhouse" leftovers. The film he has planned for his big comeback is a fourth installment (and partial reboot) of his "Spy Kids" franchise. So, what happened to Robert Rodriguez?

Way back at the beginning of the year, there was a bit of excitement and confusion when legendary Italian actor Franco Nero said he was making a spaghetti western with Quentin Tarantino titled "The Angel, the Brute and the Wise." Many assumed the latter was directing the film -- which Nero said would also star Keith Carradine and Treat Williams -- however it soon transpired that Tarantino was directing a spaghetti western of sorts, "Django Unchained," and that "The Angel, the Brute and the Wise" was something else entirely. Anyway, as talk of Tarantino's slavery vengeance pic heated up, everyone pretty much forgot about Nero's project but he still insists it's happening and that Tarantino will play a small role in it.

With everyone and their mums shooting films in 3D these days, Robert Rodriguez, one of the first filmmakers to use the format, is going the extra mile for his re-boot/sequel to his family franchise, "Spy Kids: All The Time In The World" -- the film was promised to be in '4D,' and it emerged that that meant that film would be presented in Aroma-Scope, a new take on the Smell-O-Vision concept, not seen since John Waters used it on "Polyester," with scratch'n'sniff cards being given to audience members, with on-screen prompts enabling them to smell exactly what the audience are smelling.

You can't say that Robert Rodriguez wasn't ahead of the curve when it came to the current 3D fad/revolution. The technology might have been primitive compared to what's being used these days, but 2003's "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over" was the first wide 3D release in literally decades, predating the work of better known advocates in the field like James Cameron and Robert Zemeckis, and, for better or worse, paving the way for the current glut of stereoscopic releases.

A cautionary tale and here's why the offer story is dangerous (and not something we love, but something we recognize is part of the game these days). Back in the day we were the first to report that Robert Rodriguez had been offered "Deadpool," the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds.
