We don't need to rehash the story of how "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" became the unexpected box office hit of last summer. We'll let the $480 million-plus worldwide haul for the movie speak for itself. The sequel has been brewing for a while now, with Fox locking up Andy Serkis for multiple films last year, Rupert Wyatt committed to direct and a potential 2014 release date on the horizon. And by the looks of things, Fox is ready to class up this mega sequel.

"Building the brand" is a phrase you'll hear tossed around marketing and PR offices, and also on Hollywood lots. Franchising is the name of the game and it seems everything these days gets a sequel or is set up for a sequel. Even if a movie wasn't originally envisioned to be a brand builder, if it's successful, executives want to figure out a way to keep that money train rolling.

Whether he's retiring, or taking a hiatus, or whatever, Steven Soderbergh's made it clear in recent months that after his HBO Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra," with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, we're not going to see a film from him for a while. But he's also seemingly keen to fit in as many films as he can into that timeframe, having added male stripper drama "Magic Mike" to his schedule earlier in the year.

After exiting the gestating adaptation of '60's spy series "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." as a result of casting and budgeting, it looks like Steven Soderbergh is wasting no time in finding his replacement with his upcoming sabbatical to still take place after filming the Liberace biopic, "Behind The Candelabra," starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon next summer.

Six Things We Learned From The 'Bourne Ultimatum' WriterWhile perhaps best known for writing the blockbuster smash, "The Bourne Ultimatum," which grossed a healthy $442 million worldwide, screenwriter Scott Z. Burns is possibly better known within the film industry for his collaborations with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. An Oscar winner himself (as producer of "The Inconvenient Truth"), Burns has collaborated with the "Erin Brokovich" director several times, including the writer's directorial debut "PU-239" and scripts for "Ocean's 12" (uncredited work), "The Informant!" and this weekend's virus thriller, "Contagion."

Confirms George Clooney Backed Out Of Soderbergh's 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Because Of A Bad BackWhile perhaps not as well known and respected as names like Steve Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, Diablo Cody or Charlie Kaufman, if his recent momentum continues, writer Scott Z. Burns will soon find himself among Hollywood's upper echelon of top-shelf and well-paid screenwriters (if he isn't there already). In theaters this weekend is Steven Soderbergh's pandemic thriller "Contagion," starring Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and more, one of many collaborations between Burns and the Academy Award-winning director. Known for a screenplay to a little film called "The Bourne Ultimatum," Burns also did work on "Ocean's 12," wrote "The Informant," and is an Oscar winner for producing the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Disaster -- an eternally popular obsession of film. Audiences have turned up in droves over the last century or so to watch mankind against their own extinction in the form of meteorites, earthquakes, alien invasions, exploding suns, planetary collisions, and whatever it was that was happening in "The Core." One of the more popular hypotheses is that when the end comes -- and it will -- it'll be not with a bang, but with a whimper. And that's what Steven Soderbergh has examined in "Contagion," his first studio film since 2007's "Ocean's Thirteen," that finds the spread of a deadly bird flu-type virus the source of man's demise.

Filmmaker Gives More Details On The Leni Riefenstahl Project He Deep-SixedLate last year we reported that Steven Soderbergh's spy action thriller "Haywire," starring MMA fighter and non-actor Gina Carano, was set to bow on April 22. In January, Soderbergh himself confirmed that date, but obviously if you've been paying close attention, you know that's not happening.

Throughout his film career -- which he is looking to step away from after he completes "Liberace" and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." -- Steven Soderbergh has easily moved from digestible Hollywood blockbusters like the "Ocean's Eleven" trilogy to studio dramas like "Traffic" or "Erin Brokovich," to stylish genre exercises like "Kakfa" or "Out of Sight" to micro-indies like "Bubble" or "The Girlfriend Experience." But as the years have gone on, and Soderbergh's output continues at a brisk pace, the director has become savvy to the machinations of the Hollywood machine and shepherding a project that will likely be difficult to finance or even find an audience is no longer something the helmer is willing to do.
