It has been a pretty good decade or so for John le Carré fans looking for the spymaster's works on the big screen. The 2000s have seen "The Tailor Of Panama," "The Constant Gardner" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" hit theaters, with both "A Most Wanted Man" and "Our Kind Of Traitor" in post, while "Smiley's People" continues in development. And now, yet another work by the author is making its way to the multiplex.

It appears director Todd Phillips is about to get serious for the first time after he's done with his upcoming comedy trilogy. In a surprise announcement, and what will be the first dramatic feature-length effort of his career, THR is reporting that Phillips is taking over "The Gambler" from Martin Scorsese and will make it his first post-"The Hangover Part III" project.

After taking home the Oscar for his screenplay for Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" half a decade a ago, Monahan now has his hands on more projects than you can shake a stick at. Even though "Tron: Legacy" underperformed and was met with a collective shrug from both fanboys and critics alike, Disney still wants to be in the Joseph Kosinski business and he's got a property they think will make them a mint. His graphic novel "Oblivion" was picked up by Disney a while ago and last fall "The Departed" scribe William Monahan was tasked with writing the script. Well, spring is around the corner and there is new movement on the project.

It's quite rare for a screenwriter to become something of a brand name, particularly with fewer than half a dozen produced credits, and, while William Monahan may not mean a huge amount to the general public, his is a name that tends to make film geeks prick up their ears. In the decade since he worked on the aborted project "Tripoli" with Ridley Scott, Monahan's become one of the most in-demand writers around. Scott may have botched his excellent crusades script "Kingdom of Heaven" by casting Orlando Bloom in the lead, but the writer can't have minded too much, as only a year later he was picking up an Academy Award for his work on Martin Scorsese's "The Departed."
