It's not easy creating a dystopian future on film. Ask the producers of "Divergent," which opens this week (read our review). Not only do they need to establish a demented future where we live under draconian rules, but they must do so over multiple films. Given that there are several different elements to this type of future, from corrupt governments to alien intervention to dizzying technology, it can be like mapmaking in an uncharted area. Sooner or later, you get lost and can't circle back.

Are awards season voters no longer entranced by the magic of the Coen Brothers? Even with "Inside Llewyn Davis" earning no shortage of acclaim, that has not translated into very much love from awards types, with the film getting completely shut out of the Producers Guild Award nominations yesterday. And today, the Writer's Guild have also shunned the sibling duo.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the Twilight Zone. As long as almost anyone can recall, the Adapted Screenplay category has been more far more competitive than the original script slot. In general, more Academy-friendly films tend to have been adapted from novels, non-fiction books, plays, articles, or from other material, with the competition for original fare proving thinner. As a result, the Original Screenplay category has quietly been one of our favorites, allowing foreign-language films, tiny indies or genre fare to pick up nominations where they'd otherwise have difficulty.

It's release date time with one change and three new films to add to the 2013 slate. Sony Picture Classics is getting its house in order for the summer, and CBS Films is making one change late in the year. Break out the pencils and put them in your calendar now.
