Miramax vs. MoMA: Harvey Weinstein Will Not be Outdone
Harvey Weinstein has craps that are bigger than the Museum of Modern Art (Photo: STV) Of course you know all about the Weinstein brothers' rift with Disney, and you know the legitimacy of their beloved Miramax is on death watch as they cut their ties and go indie once again with the nascent, working-titled Weinstein Co. That much is clear. What you may not have known is that the brothers appear to be having a little race with the Museum of Modern Art to see who can crank out the most Weinstein pictures by the Sept. 30 shutdown date. Variety reports that while packing up their bondage shackles and other fancy staff torture devices, Bob and Harvey discovered a catalog of about 10 films that had, over time, sequestered themselves below their black leather couch cushions. The back catalog includes John Madden's highly-anticipated Proof and Terry Gilliam's $80 million Brothers Grimm, as well as other films starring Johnny Depp, Robert Redford and Jennifer Lopez. Naturally, Harvey would not be Harvey unless he loaded all 10 titles in a single iron-plated warhead and lobbed them into the market all at once. Or kind of all-at-once: Miramax plans to stagger its releases between now and the end of September, and the studio actually intends to push Proof, The Reaper and The Libertine into wide release all on Sept. 16. In related news, Michael Eisner's dry cleaner is still trying to get the shit stains out of the Disney chief's pants. So between the first of the year and Sept. 30, Miramax will have released 21 new titles. Compare that to MoMA's ongoing Miramax: 25 Years retrospective, which will have screened 50 of the Weinsteins' most lauded films between January and the end of August. You know MoMA film curator Mary Lea Bandy is probably as surprised as anyone, and must be wondering if she and Harvey had a bet that she did not know about. Either way, you know the Weinsteins play to win—only 29 more films, guys, and you have got a new ballgame! On your mark, get set, go, I guess. |
