Buyer's Market: "The King" is In the Building

In the Navy: Bernal as Elvis in James Marsh's The King (Photo: Cannes Film Festival)

A couple of mini-major New York distributors revealed some high-profile acquisitions today, and the news is good if you are a fan of Gael Garcia Bernal and/or that guy who played Jesus.

First, ThinkFilm picked up James Marsh's The King, which premiered a few months ago at Cannes' Un Certain Regard. Hot off the heels of his incredible disappearing English-language "breakthrough" Dot the I, Bernal stars as Elvis, a young man fresh out of the Navy and in search of his long-lost father (William Hurt). When he discovers his father's peaceful life as a religious family man in Texas, the son tries to do what any estranged kid called Elvis would do: Kill the motherfucker who named him.

Insiders saw the deal coming: ThinkFilm' NYC-based distribution boss Mark Urman has some old ties with King co-writer Milo Addica from their days developing Monster's Ball at Lion's Gate.

And further continuing its hot inbreeding fetish The Reeler noted last week, Lion's Gate has pacted with some other old pals at ThinkFilm to make a few home movies—or least distribute them. According to a press release, Lion's Gate Home Entertainment now owns virtually all video rights to ThinkFilm releases, including Murderball, The Aristocrats and the Oscar-winning Born Into Brothels.

Finally, as per usual, new-ish partners Harvey Weinstein and IFC stole back at least one headline with an acquisition of their own. Simon Brand's psychological thriller Unknown features Passion player Jim Caviezel, Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper as three of five anonymous men who wake up in a locked factory without their memories.

Ha. Feel free to insert the gratuitous Meatpacking District joke of your choice here. But just leave Jesus out of it, all right?
