Cinemasports NYC: The Thrill of Victory, The Agony of Filmmaking

T-minus 22 hours and counting for the New York City incarnation of Cinemasports, where Team Reeler will compete alongside 25-30 squads of frantic film freaks for the honor of Best in Show. I had a chance to catch up with the Cinemasports founder Jin Woo Joo, who graciously took a minute to fill us in with the latest while applying the finishing touches to this year's event.

"The size of the event will be just about right," Jin told me. "It's shaping up to be a good year. I think we have some pretty good press coverage, including MSNBC coverage, and I think we are going to be mentioned on a weekend picks show on NBC in the morning. So hopefully, that will draw some people out to the screening. Overall, it's going really well."

Of course, as a pretty horrendous procrastinator myself, I had to ask him about the late surge of people who are probably rushing to join the fun. "This happens quite often," Jin admitted, "where you sort of have this snowball of teams signing up at the end. It's kind of the nature of the event, and I like the fact that it doesn't take months and months of planning. You don't have to do months of organization to join in. The entire event can be very spontaneous. When that happens, it feels like there's momentum—you never have to roll up your sleeves and keep plugging away. It's over before you know it."

OK, well, great. My teammates and I feel better. Making us feel even BETTER is the report that Cinemasports' Best in Show recceives an nNovia Quick Capture, which functions as sort of an external hard drive to connect to your camera—saving some time logging footage into Final Cut or whatever you wind up editing with. It's a $1,000 prize, which I would probably trade for a backseat full of Hennessy, now that Cam'ron has me thinking about it.

Anyway, Team Reeler is still open until the event starts up at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Washington Square; feel free to drop me a line if you would like to participate, or stop by The Cutting Room tomorrow night at 8 for the Cinemasports screening party. Either/or/both are sure to be genuine hoots.
