Independent Film Week: It Is 1987 All Over Again

Matthew Modine shows his war face in Full Metal Jacket

I was browsing my new Village Voice today when I happened upon a half-page ad for Independent Film Week, brought to you by, um, IFP. As explained in detail today by indieWIRE's Brian Brooks, IFP coordinated the event to coincide with the IFP Market coming up on Sept. 19; the week actually kicks off with the NYC premiere of Rodrigo Garcia's Nine Lives and continues over the next three nights with events featuring Garcia, Norman Jewison, Glenn Close and Matthew Modine (who will revisit shooting Full Metal Jacket at the SoHo Apple Store Sept. 20; you might grab a sleeping bag and get in line this weekend if you can).

Weirdly enough (or perhaps not), Magnolia Pictures' Nine Lives is the only independent film featured among the commentaries and Q&A's set for Independent Film Week. Garcia and his cinematographer Xavier Perez Grobet--who shot Nine Lives in a series of long, unbroken takes--will also discuss their work at the Apple Store--one night before Close attends a chat following a screening of the 1987 Paramount blockbuster Fatal Attraction (?) at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.

But look, I am not asking any questions--after all, the Voice ad promises free popcorn and soda at participating theaters, which is like the equivalent of a meal at Reeler HQ. And all I have to do is listen to Norman Jewison read about his own 1987 NYC phenomenon, Moonstruck? Oh, somebody pinch me! Or something.

The Cronenberg Screening sold out at the AMMI. Damn it!

Seems that we are on the same page with a lot of this coverage. I dig the blog. Keep up the good work.
