Independent Film Week: Come One, Come All (Except on Monday)

Ageless wonder Holly Hunter at Nine Lives' premiere Monday night (Photos: STV)

I do not know if you would call this ironic, but the IFP Market's "public" component—Independent Film Week—opened Monday night with an invitation-only premiere for Magnolia Pictures' Nine Lives. Not that there were not plenty of lookie-loos hanging around the Upper East Side's Beekman Theater, many of whom were eager to purchase tickets once folks like Glenn Close and Holly Hunter started showing up. Alas, they must wait until October for Rodrigo Garcia's highly interesting glimpse into the lives of nine separate women, all shot in continuous takes as they deal with some pivotal drama in their lives.

The event actually worked quite well for me, with Reeler HQ about 20 blocks from the action. But Independent Film Week moves back downtown tonight—and into a more genuinely public sphere—when Matthew Modine drops by SoHo's Apple Store to wax romantic about Cindy Adams discuss his new book and review his work with Stanley Kubrick in Full Metal Jacket. The event starts at 8 p.m., but as I have mentioned before, you might take a blanket and a book if you want to camp early enough for a seat.

Michelle, seriously--not here. Magnolia Pictures boss Eammon Bowles and IFP executive director Michelle Byrd

Check out The Reeler's coverage of Modine's appearance tomorrow, and look for a little more thoroughgoing profile of Nine Lives when the film opens in New York Oct. 14.
