Kubrick Reclaims 'Shining' Spotlight From Ryang at BAM
Will the real Shining please stand up? I do not know what you would call this development: a New York cinema meta-moment, or some cosmic tweak, or maybe just boring old coincidence. But in the roiling wake of Robert Ryang's brilliant Shining pseudo-trailer, BAMcinematek has announced Stanley Kubrick's The Shining as the winner of its Attack of the Trailers battle last summer. As you might recall, BAM hosted a program in July comprising a collection of classic movie trailers from years past. Organizers invited audience members to vote on their favorite trailer, with the highest-vote-getter set to be screened in its entirety this December. The counting only took two months or so, but The Shining's elevator torrent of blood finally wiped out the competition. And not a moment too soon, as Ryang's genius re-cut eschewed blood for a more warm-hearted romp about fatherhood and friendship (and, of course, a memorable rumble through Peter Gabriel's previously nauseating "Solisbury Hill"). No word yet on whether Ryang's trailer will precede The Shining's Dec. 22 screening, but face it: Do you need to see the parody to know you will probably never view Kubrick's film the same way again?
