Tonight at NYU: Hanson Defines Failure For a New Generation

Plummet into obscurity today--the Hanson way!

From the "Holy Shit, I Thought We Deported Their Asses" file, The Reeler just caught wind of the event to end all events--if only for the attendees whose eyes liquefy into smoky streams of high-fructose acid:

The band Hanson will be visiting your school on Oct. 27th to screen their self-produced documentary titled Strong Enough To Break at The Cantor Film Center (36 E 8th St) beginning at 6pm. Directly after the film the band will be doing a question and answer. The documentary discusses the collision of art and commerce and the current state of the music industry.

We would like your help making sure your students attend the documentary screening via telling them in class about the screening, emailing the students and or offering extra credit if they attend.

We have received a great deal of positive feedback from professors at major colleges nationwide over the last few weeks. USC is going to integrate the documentary into their curriculum. Majors specifically associated with business (hanson runs their own record label and is the same age as your student body), communications, journalism, music and film will benefit from this event.

Hold it--I thought people went to schools like USC and NYU so they would not wind up like Hanson. Did I miss the higher education paradigm shift that encourages obsolete, androgynous child stars as professional role models? Shit, I'd better get dressed.

omg omg i missed it! its 6:32! DOUBLE CRAP

please scream like a little girl when you see them. i'm sorry I can't be there to do it myself.

Oh wow. So you think it is better to throw your 40,000 a year away at a school than to make millions each time you release a record. Kudos to you. Kudos. Personally, I'd take the money and fame over burning my parents' money any day.

sounds like a good idea to me. hanson are great musicians. they know what their doing & how to do it. not all hanson fans are the crazy little girls, who cry & scream everytime they see them. im 21 years old & a huge hanson fan, but i dont go screaming in their face when i see them. oh, & child stars? i dont think so. theyve been doing this for over 9 years now. please stop being one of those people who put down music they dont understand.

Can you get any more cliche? "OMG! Hanson are still around! But I thought those girls were gone so long ago!" Blah blah blah. Please. Yes, this is the band that sings MMMBop, but they also wrote that song when none of them were older than ten years old. Obviously, people grow up, since they are now all over the age of twenty. You know that saying "don't judge a book by its cover?" Well, don't judge a band by the music they put out almost ten years ago. Even if you don't like them you have to respect them for the fact that they broke contract with their record company and made their OWN record company just so they could do what THEY want and not comform to what the masses want.

KUDOS TO HANSON! ...boo to you.

Jokes from 1998 -- my favorite! You are so on the edge.

It's okay if you don't understand the talent that these boys have or the passion of their fans. Your mindless attacks and repetitive drivel do nothing more than expose your own insecurities and inability to recognize greatness. Do you really think that any given Hanson fan hasn't heard these insults before? More importantly, do you think it's going to diminish the respect and admiration we have for them? We're not going to apologize for falling in love with a silly little song and three boys most of us have never met, mostly because the effect they've had on our lives far outweighs whatever negativity people like you fling at us. You call them obsolete, but why? Because their music isn't on the radio? Given what is, I'd take that as a compliment. They routinely sell out shows every time they tour, their ten (yes, ten) CDs have sold millions, and they never fail to make an entire venue of people cheer when they play "MMMBop." So if you're not into real music and actual passion, then it's your loss. But don't piss on everyone else's parade. Oh, and finally: androgynous? Well, yeah, maybe... but you're probably just jealous that Taylor's prettier than you.

I'm pretty indifferent to Hanson, but I must say, they are no failures. Most students studying business and music would love to have the kind of success they have. They make a living playing music and they run their own label. If that's failure, your perspective is pretty skewed. They have already had more success than 99% of bands will ever have. Why the hate towards them?

Ooooh I feel like things are gonna get heated up here. First of all, as a music business major, I would like to inform you of how hard it is to stay in the music industry, especially when you want to stay true to yourselves. It's kind of hard to find that quality in people nowadays. Second, these are no "child pop stars blown into obscurity". These are sickeningly talented musicians who wouldn't conform to who Island Def Jam wanted them to be. They would rather lose their fame and fortune and take a chance on spending thousands on their own label, and survive. Considering their selling out Carnegie Hall in 7 minutes flat and lofts in NYC just might show how successful they are in the independent music business. Their sound is mature and make money on talent, not on the image a consultant makes.

And scene.

Hmmm, with Michael Jackson out of the country it appears his fans have found a new flag to rally around. I can't wait 'til Triumph shows up.
