It is Official: Mormonsploitation Coming Soon to NYC
More and more, it seems as though every day is a Mensa meeting at the Pioneer Theater. How else are we to explain December's Mormonsploitation program, featuring a week of films dedicated to all things LDS? This is some fairly unprecedented shit right here, in which John Ford's underseen Wagon Master gets equal play with Shane Carruth's Primer (which is as much a Mormon film as anything potty-mouthed LDS director Neil Labute has ever made, but the guys in shirts and ties evidently make it close enough) and the evolution of the New York Dolls' Mormon component is represented by legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen's All Dolled Up and Greg Whiteley's recent, acclaimed documentary about bass player Arthur "Killer" Kane, New York Doll. The whole thing is anchored by Ian Allen's silent, satirical remake of the 1922 anti-LDS film Trapped by the Mormons, the original of which will also receive an ultra-rare screening (from a "16mm print proudly projected at the wrong speed," according to programmer Ray Privett) on Dec. 17. Add a Jared Hess/Jon Heder short and a few other gems from Dennis Nyback's cavernous archives, and you might as well start planning your two-year missionary trip. Series passes are $52 at the Pioneer's Web site, special Mormon underwear not included. Posted by stvanairsdale on Nov 25, 2005 at 11:55AM |
