Jane Fonda

The American Film Institute's 42nd Lifetime Achievement will be given to two-time Oscar-winner Jane Fonda at a gala tribute on June 5, 2014.

Since her film career began in the late-1950s under the guidance of Lee Strasberg, Fonda has had one of the most enduring and illustrious careers in Hollywood. In 1971, she won her first Best Actress Academy Award for her brave, unsentimental performance as a classy call girl in Alan J. Pakula's paranoid thriller "Klute." She won again in 1979 for Hal Ashby's moving wartime drama "Coming Home" and has in total received seven nominations (clips from these films, and more, after the jump).

Fonda has starred in more than 40 films, from "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" (1969) and "The China Syndrome" (1979) to "The Morning After" (1986) and "On Golden Pond" (1981). Most recently, she appeared as Nancy Reagan in "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and on HBO's "The Newsroom" in a recurring role as a no-frills CEO that nabbed her a Primetime Emmy nom this year.

"Jane Fonda is American film royalty," says AFI Chairman Sir Howard Stringer. "The world watched as she found her own voice and forged her own path as an actor and a cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film."

The 42nd AFI Life Achievement Award tribute special will return for its second year on TNT when it airs in June 2014, followed by encores on Turner Classic Movies. Last year's honoree was Mel Brooks, and previous recipients include Shirley MacLaine and Morgan Freeman.

While Fonda needs no introduction, take a look back at clips from her legendary career after the jump.
