One of our fave internet diversions, Brain Pickings, published a post on the 100 ideas that changed film -- from slapstick humor (#21), queer cinema (#97), censorship (#48), to the kinetoscope (#3).  The post is derived from film reviewer David Parkinson's book 100 Ideas That Changed Cinema, which begins with an enticing intro and eloquent summary of film progress: "What follows is as much a chronology of business opportunism and technical pragmatism, as a celebration of artistry, social commitment, and showmanship."

Explore the original post here for some intriguing visualizations of film's evolution.
