I’m checked in. Not enough hangers. The air conditioning works. The weather is balmy, humid, not too hot. I will install the new BlackBerry TIFF program app that’s similar to the iPhone app at the Seattle Film Fest, and this year they’re handing out a transit pass. Cool.
Tonight: Paul Bettany and wife Jennifer Connelly play the Darwins in Creation. Indicative of the current indie market is the fact that producer Jeremy Thomas has no North American distrib. But getting an opening night slot—unusual that Toronto books a movie that is not Canadian—helps the movie to stand out. Here’s a cool NYT piece from the scientist perspective.
IndieWIRE tracks 145 movies for sale here. Yikes. How many will get sold? A handful. Truth is, most of the studio subsids and bigger indie distribs could use another Oscar picture. But few of the films here will fall in that category—no matter how wonderful they are. Most will go DIY route.
Another big movie to see this weekend: Lee Daniels’ Sundance hit Precious. Here’s LAT. The Coen brothers’ A Serious Man press screening is tomorrow AM. Can’t wait. Early buzz is good—not great—on Men Who Stare at Goats, one of two George Clooney movies that will bring the star to Toronto (along with Telluride hit Up in the Air).
