New Avatar Trailer is Up

Thompson on Hollywood

I know there are a lot of Avatar naysayers out there but when the hairs rise on the back of my neck I know there’s something real going on. I felt it with Twilight and I feel it with this latest Avatar trailer which went up on Yahoo at 10 am PST (video on jump).

What more does a moviegoer want than something they’ve never seen before? The new Avatar trailer has added more action and depth. It hangs on Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully, who flies off to faraway Pandora to encounter the nine-foot tall blue Na’vi aliens. He enters this world full of hostile exotic creatures in the form of an avatar alien/human hybrid. And needless to say, James Cameron, the writer-director behind Titanic, is giving us action, danger, romance, and never-before seen visual effects—in 3D (which is obviously not operative with an online trailer). Will this sci-fi adventure wow enough general audiences to make back its ginormous budget? We’ll just have to find out on December 18.

My skepticism is draining away, but it’s not completely gone. If they can get away from “game-changer” and keep hitting scifi-action-adventure-romance buttons, they should be in good shape…assuming the movie actually delivers those things.

I genuinely hope it does, I’m just not ready to predict it.

the original materials looked ‘funny’. but it seems pretty clear to me now this one is going to rake the box office. rental/tv/cable should be very healthy. i imaging there will also be toys, action figures, etc, with x-mas around the corner…

The new trailer is incredible and, unlike Twilight (which was one of the most amateurish movies ever made), clearly shows Avatar to be the work of passion for its incredibly talented filmmaker. Hold on folks, the ride is about to begin.

I like this trailer a lot more too. The only problem with too much CGI is that it kinda looks & feels like the Star Wars prequels. Hopefully, it’s better than those films. It definitely looks much cooler.

I don’t know. I can pretty much guess the entire plotline of this movie along with a lot of razzle dazzle and a ton of sentimentality. Just have to wait and see. But then again I wasn’t bowled over by Titantic either. I still think T2 and Aliens are Cameron’s best. And oh yeah don’t forget Piranha 2? How come that film wasn’t listed as one of his film credits in the trailer? That’s the Cameron I miss the most
