Tornado Hits Train

You've seen plenty of visual effects from movies like Twister and The Fugitive, but here's real live video of what happens when a tornado hits a train. It was shot on January 7, 2008 from a mounted camera on one of four locomotives as a freak tornado cut a swath near Lawrence, Illinois.

Inglourious Basterds: Recut, Nine Clips

Inglourious Basterds: Recut, Nine Clips
Quentin Tarantino's recut of Inglourious Basterds is one minute longer than the Cannes version, and much improved. It's a gorgeous movie with a great eclectic soundtrack crammed with everything from Ennio Morricone to a brilliant use of David Bowie's "Putting Out the Fire." (Trivia question: what movie debuted that song?)

Hughes Pen Pal Blogs and Talks

Alison Byrne Fields, who became Hughes' pen pal when she was 15, blogs about it and talks about it. I was moved by the fact that she contacted him as an adult to tell him how she turned out, and he responded by telling her he was proud of her. She has been overwhelmed by the enormous fan and media response.

Iron Man 2 Comic-Con Footage

Iron Man 2 Comic-Con Footage
The Iron Man 2 footage that was screened at Comic-Con has showed up online at Worst Previews. It's shaky-cam. Looks like great smart fun to me. (Note how Don Cheadle deals with his replacing Terrence Howard.) We have to wait until May 2010. It hasn't been edited into a movie yet.

Julie & Julia Targets Women, G.I. Joe Goes for Guys

Julie & Julia Targets Women, G.I. Joe Goes for Guys
Am I the only one who feels bombarded by too much PR on Julie & Julia? It’s worth seeing for the incandescent performance of Meryl Streep as the big, bubbly, adorable chef Julia Child, who was very much a product of her time. Stanley Tucci is equally charming as her mousy, adoring husband. Both should earn awards attention at year's end. I wish that the filmmakers had bucked the conventional wisdom that holds that a period story must be framed by a contemporary one to lure younger viewers. The sections with Amy Adams as blogger Julie Powell cooking for her namby-pamby husband were boring.

Lee Revamps Ride with the Devil

In the stellar career of Ang Lee, one movie stands out like a sore thumb, not only as one of his few boxoffice clunkers, but as a film which he edited for a studio. "Of the 11 films I worked on with Ang, it's the only one that was not his cut," says Lee's longtime writer-collaborator James Schamus, who will appear with Lee onstage at the Walter Reade after the work-in-progress director's cut of Ride with the Devil screens August 10 during the Film Society at Lincoln Center's complete Lee retrospective.
