On 'The $11 Billion Year' Promo Tour, from NY to LA

I'll be signing copies of "The $11 Billion Year" on Sunday March 16 at 6 PM at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre, followed by a Q & A on the future of movies with The Hollywood Reporter's Kim Masters and the LA Times' John Horn, regulars on KCRW's "The Business," and a screening of Ben Affleck's Oscar-winner "Argo."

Fox Searchlight Dates Sundance Hit 'Calvary,' Starring Brendan Gleeson

Fox Searchlight picked up at the Sundance Film Festival "Calvary," writer-director John Michael McDonagh's follow-up to the masterful "The Guard," also starring Brendan Gleeson. The distributor has now booked a summer release date.

Mark Levinson's "Particle Fever" is the first great doc of the year (and let's hope it gets remembered during the next awards season). It's about the ground-breaking, Nobel Prize-winning experiment that helped unravel the nature of existence. Veteran editor/sound designer Walter Murch ("Apocalypse Now"), whose always had a fascination for physics, was brought on to "galvanize" the project but ended up spending a year humanizing this compelling work about the collision of science and art.

REVIEW: SXSW Grand Jury Doc Winner 'The Great Invisible'

I was happy to see that Margaret Brown’s deserving documentary “The Great Invisible,” on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its aftermath, nabbed the Grand Jury award at this year’s SXSW. While the doc competition lineup was strong, Brown’s film displayed the tautest and most skillful chops in terms of dynamic storytelling -- something that’s become increasingly important with the abundance of documentaries being made.

Academy Names Film Scholars

Who has the Academy's Educational Grants Committee picked this year as an Academy Scholar to receive $25,000 to write a book? Past awardees include writers Cari Beauchamp, Richard B. Jewell, and Donald Crafton. The Academy doles out the first portion of the grants at a ceremony on Monday March 17.

WATCH: First Trailer for James Brown Biopic 'Get On Up'

A first trailer has arrived for the James Brown biopic "Get On Up," starring Chadwick Boseman (who played another African American icon, Jackie Robinson, in last year's "42") in the title role. Tate Taylor of "The Help" is directing, while Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (Oscar nominated and Oscar winning for "The Help," respectively) have all reteamed for this new film. Watch below.
