Antonioni's Stark Portrait of Haute-Bourgeois Boredom and Betrayal 'La Notte' Lives Again on Criterion Blu-Ray

Could a film like "La Notte" ever exist today? What would it look like? Released in 1961, Michelangelo Antonioni's visually sleek modernist masterpiece features two international stars of considerable pedigree -- Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau -- who talk, and also don't talk, about the undetectable meanings of life and love.

This Weekend: Plenty to Choose From with 'Dallas Buyers Club', 'Broken Circle Breakdown,' 'Ender's Game' and 'About Time'

A plenitude of films hit theaters this weekend. Best reviewed is Jean-Marc Vallee's "Dallas Buyers Club," starring an emaciated Matthew McConughey as real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodruff, who in the early '90s set up an under-the-table pharmacy in Texas supplying unapproved meds for HIV. McConaughey has stirred up Oscar talk for his performance, as has Jared Leto, in a supporting turn as Woodruff's cross-dressing partner in crime.

Review: 'Last Vegas' Is Hellish Vision

Jon Turteltaub’s “Last Vegas,” which won’t be the last of anything, is a visionary movie -- the vision being hellish. We’ve already been seeing the likes of it -- aging stars, packaged together for amalgamated throw-weight. And we’re going to see more of its comedic ilk as the Boomers slouch toward the box office/grave, with humor that rests -- as if against an aluminum walker -- on cheap geriatric sex gags, prostate jokes, bad eyesight.
