Oscar Foreign Language Frontrunners Amid Record 76 Official Submissions

As the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to debate the best way to reform the foreign language branch, from new president Cheryl Boone-Isaacs to producer Mark Johnson, who is restored to running the various voting committees who check out the movies submitted by countries all over the world. That number has been steadily increasing: This year a record 76 films were officially submitted, up from 71 last year.

Focus Features has nabbed screen rights to Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille's "Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed." In the book, the authors describe systematically hunting down America's most notorious traitor, all the while pushing up against the CIA's institutionalized sexism.

First Annual La Costa Film Festival Debuts October 24 with 'The Short Game' and Sports Film Competition

The first annual La Costa Film Festival, set at the lush Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, gets underway on October 24 with an Opening Night Gala under the stars followed by three days of international narrative and documentary features and shorts as well as a sports-themed competition. It includes the fest opener, the golfing documentary "The Short Game," executive produced by Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, which follows eight of the best seven-year-old golfers in the world as they train for and compete in the World Championships of Junior Golf.

Quentin Tarantino Lists Top Films of 2013, Including 'The Lone Ranger' and 'This is the End'

Quentin Tarantino sat out the ten best lists last year because he was in fevered production on "Django Unchained." This year he has already posted his alphabetical ten best list of 2013 so far on his site. While the Oscar-winner is an Academy member, don't look for his taste to be replicated by the Academy at large.
