Academy Changes Rules for 85th Oscars on Foreign-Language Film, Makeup, Music & VFX Categories

The Academy's Board of Governors has approved the rules for the 85th Academy Awards. The most changes are in the Music, Foreign Language, Makeup and Visual Effects categories.

For the Original Song category, "in rare and extraordinary circumstances," the executive committee could recommend that a fourth songwriter for an individual song be considered. The previous rule, in effect since 2005, stated that only a third songwriter could be added under unusual conditions.

Finally adjusting to our increasingly digital world, the Academy is allowing in the Foreign Language Film categor for qualifying films to be submitted in either 35mm or DCP, but they are no longer required to be exhibited in these formats in their countries of origin.

The Makeup award has now been re-titled the "Makeup and Hairstyling Award." Also, during the nominations process all branch members who have seen the seven shortlisted titles will be able to vote for their top three choices.

In the Visual Effects category, nominees will be selected from a pool of exactly ten films, as opposed to the previous rule that allowed the pool to consist of seven to ten films.
