Academy Deems 75 Original Songs Eligible for Oscar Contention, from 'Skyfall' to 'Paul Williams Still Alive'

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has deemed 75 feature film songs eligible for contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 85th Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has deemed 75 feature film songs eligible for contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 85th Academy Awards.

Leading contenders, per usual, often come from animated features (like "Brave" or "Frankenweenie") or musicals (like "Les Miserables") or are sung by major pop stars (Adele both co-wrote and performs the "Skyfall" theme song). Doc "Chasing Ice" song "Before My Time" is performed by Scarlett Johansson, while Paul Williams wrote a song for his own doc profile. Bon Jovi wrote and sang "Not Running Anymore" for "Standup Guys."

Voting members of the Music Branch will watch clips for the songs and vote in the order of their preference for not more than five in the category. The five with the most votes will be nominated for final voting for the award. The criteria are:

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

The original songs, along with the motion picture in which each song is featured, are listed below in alphabetical order by film and song title:

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
