Ben Kingsley's Tightrope with Mythology, from Attenborough's 'Gandhi' to Upcoming 'Boxtrolls,' 'Exodus,' and 'Jungle Book'

Ben Kingsley relayed how sad it was that Richard Attenborough had suffered a massive stroke and could hardly string a sentence together, and that he had visited him not too long ago. But our entire conversation, which covered "The Boxtrolls," "Exodus: Gods and Kings," "The Walk," and "The Jungle Book," sprang from the actor finding those seminal moments of inner truth and character flaws in a script that he can build on from the inside out.

Remembering Actor-Director Richard Attenborough (12 HIGHLIGHT CLIPS)

I was lucky to interview Attenborough twice, and I found him gracious and inspirational. He talked about capturing the psychopathic ventriloquist played by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the underrated "Magic"; the necessity of using star cameos for dramatic emphasis in the even more underrated "A Bridge Too Far"; and his acute understanding of the acting profession that made him more than qualified to tackle the celebrated "Chorus Line" musical. Judge the work, fair enough, but don’t judge me as being unqualified to make a musical, he lamented.

Sir Ben Kingsley Goes Sci-Fi, the Remarkable Shelf Life of Aging Movie Stars

There's a magic zone with male movie stars in their 50s and 60s, where they're old enough to have accrued gravitas and authority, but not too old to no longer be believably physically powerful. Ben Kingsley, at 69, is enjoying quite a run: he stars as the terrifying Mandarin in "Iron Man 3," has a pivotal role as a powerful warrior in the upcoming sci-fi adventure "Ender's Game," and will also star in upcoming sci-fi thriller "Our Robot Overlords," directed by Jon Wright.
