Going Inside the Production Design Secrets of 'Walter Mitty'

Designing the "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" was a new experience for Jeff Mann, known for working on such "blunt instruments" as "Tropic Thunder" with Ben Stiller and "Transformers" with Michael Bay. But Stiller definitely had a different mind set for the daydreaming Everyman, full of whimsy and wistfulness, and Mann visualized that world in a graphic and poetic way that's certainly worthy of Oscar consideration.

Ben Stiller Talks 'Walter Mitty,' Gets Vulnerable, Puts Audiences First, Critics Last (Six-Minute Trailer)

Ben Stiller is one of the few remaining movie stars--audiences actually turn up to see him. While he does the occasional Noah Baumbach movie, Stiller's a studio animal. He's operating in that narrow band that remains for high-budget mainstream commercial movies aimed at a wide swath of audiences. And he's able to function with relative freedom because of his track record as a comedian (the "Meet the Parents" and "Night at the Museum" series) and producer-writer-director ("Tropic Thunder"). That's a sweet spot indeed.

Ben Stiller's 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' Joins Oscar Race as NYFF Centerpiece Gala (TRAILER)

As soon as I saw the impressive footage from "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" at CinemaCon, I knew Ben Stiller's ambitious cinematic retelling of the classic James Thurber short story was a potential Oscar Contender. And the New York Film Festival likes it enough to accord it the prestige Centerpiece Gala for a World Premiere on Saturday, October 5 at the 51st NYFF (September 27 – October 13). Opening night is "Captain Phillips." Closing night will be a high-profile fall title that that has not been announced for Venice or Toronto, such as Cannes hit "All is Lost," which I hear could earn Robert Redford an Oscar nomination for his virtually silent performance. Will David O. Russell's "American Hustle" be finished in time? "Foxcatcher"? "The Wolf of Wall Street"?

Video Clip: Ben Stiller Talks About His 'New Yorker' Profile

During last week's The New Yorker Festival 2012, Ben Stiller and Letter from California columnist Tad Friend talked backstage about the magazine's recent profile of the actor, comedian, writer and director (clip below). They got along, apparently, although both mentioned nursing migraines after a four to five hour interview.

American Cinematheque vs. American Film Institute: One's Young, the Other Isn't

Bravo to the American Cinematheque for singling out a comedian, Ben Stiller, for its 26th annual achievement award. He is more than worthy. But this choice does serve to highlight the growing gap between the Cinematheque tribute, which tends to veer toward stars in their moneymaking prime, and the American Film Institute achievement award, which often hits stars at the senior end of their career trajectory.
