TIFF Thriller 'Cut Bank' Picked Up by A24, DIRECTV

A24 and DIRECTV have picked up U.S. rights to Matt Shakman's feature directorial debut, thriller "Cut Bank," which premiered at this year's Los Angeles Film Festival and will show before international audiences later this year in Toronto.

WATCH: Robert Downey Jr. Breaks 'The Judge' Trailer on Twitter, Variety Intros Vscore

In a sign of the times, Warner Bros. had Robert Downey, Jr. debut on Twitter the trailer for "The Judge," a serious drama in which the star plays a big-shot New York lawyer who returns home to Indiana after his mother dies, only to find himself defending his estranged father (Robert Duvall), who has been accused of murdering her. Why not? Downey has 1.9 million followers on the social media site. In other words, when Iron Man tweets, America listens.

Yah, That's a Good One: 'Fargo' Premiere Lands More Than Four Million Viewers UPDATED

UPDATE: The premiere of "Fargo," FX's new take on the Coens' 1996 classic (the brothers are exec producing the series), landed good ratings on its April 15 debut, averaging 2.65 million viewers in its initial airing, with 4.15 million total tuning in throughout the first and repeat airings.

As Billy Bob Thornton rejoins the Coen brothers' for their new "Fargo" TV series, at long last, his fest circuit veteran "Jayne Mansfield's Car" will be available on-demand August 20th and in theaters on September 13 via Anchor Bay Films. Marking "Slingblade" writer-director Thornton's first film since 2001's "Daddy and Them," "Jayne Mansfield's Car" was co-written with Tom Epperson.

Mill Valley Film Festival Wraps Its Oscar-Track Film Run

The Mill Valley Film Festival has concluded its 11-day pursuit of Bay Area Academy members. The festival began with the US premiere of "Silver Linings Playbook," with director David O. Russell and star Bradley Cooper appearing for a Q& A; the film won yet another Audience Award, as did closer "Life of Pi," with Ang Lee on hand.
