Weekend Top Ten Box Office: Marvel's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Smashes the Field

Marvel/Disney's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" vacuumed up nearly 60% of the Top 10 gross of $157 million. Recent openers "Noah" (Paramount) and "Divergent" (Lionsgate) took powerful body blows and fell quickly from their modest starts. "Captain America"'s strong number distorts the overall box office performance, which is otherwise showing signs of weakness.

This Weekend, Watch Johansson and Gainsbourg Suck Men's Souls in 'Under the Skin' and 'Nymphomaniac: Volume II'

This weekend, catch sexy Scarlett Johansson in not one, but two films, and in two wildly different roles. While reviews are solid-gold for the Marvel sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in which she stars opposite the reassuringly bland charms of Chris Evans, you're unlikely to see a weirder, or better, movie than Jonathan Glazer's freaky-good succubus-from-space odyssey "Under the Skin."

Is Harvey Taking His Scissors to Korean Hit 'Snowpiercer'?

So far, the reviews for dystopian thriller "Snowpiercer" are raves. But that doesn't mean that Harvey Weinstein won't tinker with the Bong Joon-ho film before releasing it to the territories he controls, which are most of the English-speaking world. Australia trade reporter Don Groves reports that Weinstein is tangling with Bong over the final cut of his post-apocalyptic thriller, which is now 126 minutes long, "demanding Bong slash the running time by 20 minutes for the version to be released in TWC’s territories."

Comic-Con's Marvel Panel Stars 'Thor''s Loki, 'Captain America''s Evans & Johansson (VIDEOS)

Nobody understands the Comic-Con demo better than Marvel production chief Kevin Feige, who knows how to create material that will please these fans. In Hall H you can see that he gets it. He's giving them what they want. He's not shoving something down their throat with scads of advertising dollars, not wowing them with a great VFX trailer. He's bringing to life beloved characters who exist inside a well-considered consistent universe. So when Tom Hiddleston turns up in full Loki regalia and exhorts "the arena that is known as Hall H" to become his army--"where are your Avengers now?"--the crowd ate it up (see that video and all the panel videos below).

As expected, Marvel has wasted no time ramping up production on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which is now underway in Los Angeles. Chris Evans is back as the beefy, star-spangled Captain, with Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson on board as ubiquitous Avengers Black Widow and Nick Fury. Additionally, film icon Robert Redford is playing Agent Alexander Pierce.

Weinstein Company Picks Up Bong Joon-Ho's Futuristic Ice Age Thriller 'Snowpiercer'

Ten minutes of AFM footage was enough for the Weinstein Company to scoop up English-speaking rights (including U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) to South Korean Bong Joon-ho's dystopian "Snowpiercer," an action thriller starring Chris Evans.

Venice Trailer: 'The Iceman' Stars Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, and Many Gunshots

"The Iceman" stars Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road," "Boardwalk Empire") as a notorious hit man - responsible for the death of 100 men associated with different crime rings around New York. While his career provides the action, his split from his family life provides the drama: the devoted father and husband managed to keep his career a secret from his wife (Winona Ryder) and children over the decades he acted as a brutal mercenary.

'The Avengers': Who Comes Out Ahead? Everyone. Almost.

When I finally saw "Marvel's The Avengers" Sunday in murky 3-D at Loew's 83rd Street Cinema in Manhattan, like everyone else in the theater, I had a roaring good time.
