Now and Then: In 'Contagion' and 'Children of Men,' Disaster Runs Cold and Hot

The opening minutes of "Contagion" are all surface, literally. A bowl of peanuts on the bartop, a swiped credit card, an elevator button, the human hand: each is a vector of death itself, a pandemic already in motion. With the rasp of a cough, a title card tells us we're in "Day 2." It's terrifying.

Box Office: Lion King Steals Home Run from Moneyball During Crowded Weekend

Box Office: Lion King Steals Home Run from Moneyball During Crowded Weekend
It was such a crowded weekend at the box office that Sunday estimates are unclear. Clearly, too many movies were aimed at men. Anthony D'Alessandro reports. If you asked distribution executives on Thursday what was going to be No. 1 at the weekend box office, they would have pointed at the other guy. Sony, Warner Bros. and Disney all had strong prospects, but knew they could easily lose to each other. And this had nothing to do with the usual fall award contenders.

Weekend Preview: Testosterone Rules Box Office with Moneyball, Killer Elite, Machine Gun Preacher

There's a lot of testosterone at the box office this weekend. The subtle kind: Brad Pitt's heartfelt sports drama Moneyball. The less subtle kind: Killer Elite and The Badass Gerard Butler Show (aka Machine Gun Preacher). The subversive kind: Andrew Haigh's exceptionally reviewed gay romance Weekend. Add to that list Chris Evans' I-Can-Be-Edgy-Like-Ryan-Gosling-Too Puncture, in which he plays a drug addict lawyer amidst a true-story pharmaceutical conspiracy, and Cameron Crowe's love letter to rock stars, Pearl Jam Twenty. Details, reviews and trailers on these films and more below:

Portman & Butler Win Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton Poll for Scorsese's Furious Love

Portman & Butler Win Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton Poll for Scorsese's Furious Love
It will be no easy task to cast legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Last week we invited you to play dreamcast with us, voting for the actors to play Taylor and Burton in Martin Scorsese's adaptation of their tempestuous love affair and chronicled in Furious Love. The results are in, and despite being completely out of the running until June 24, Natalie Portman surged to the top to join Gerard Butler. We initially paired the two together, stating: "If anyone can raise Portman’s temperature, it would be Butler. He’d have to step up and bring some depth to the rugged masculinity he so easily depicts. Portman probably has this in her, but it won’t come naturally." Second and third place winners, our picks and the complete poll results are below:

New AMC/Regal Distrib Open Road to Release Killer Elite September 23

As Cinedigm's Chris McGurk advocates a partnership rather than adversary relationship between distributors and exhibitors, by sharing in the back-end of movies that hit VOD in advance of the usual 90-day ancillary window, dominant theater chains AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment's fledgling distributor Open Road Films is testing the question of whether there's an inherent conflict in theaters owning their own distribution arm. They are calling Open Road "acquisition-based," and thus their first major release (which they insist is not a remake), Killer Elite, was financed by Omnilab Media (Oliver Stone's W) and produced through Omnilab’s Australian production arm, Ambience Entertainment. Inferno Entertainment handled worldwide sales.
