Meryl Streep Disses Walt Disney, Emma Thompson Disses Perms at National Board of Review Dinner

The National Board of Review dinner on January 7 reportedly took a nine-minute detour from its regularly scheduled programming when presenter Meryl Streep launched into a lengthy introduction of her pal, "Saving Mr. Banks" star Emma Thompson, which covered everything from Walt Disney's not so spotless track record, to Mozart, Van Gogh and Quentin Tarantino. Oh yeah, and Streep also wore a baseball cap with "Prize Winner" emblazoned on it; she started the speech with "Oh, I'm not the prize winner?"

Things I Learned at the 'Saving Mr. Banks' Premiere; Hanks, Thompson, Sherman & More Talk Disney, Travers and 'Mary Poppins'

The Disney company wasn't sure they were ready to jump on board "Saving Mr. Banks," admits motion picture chairman Alan Horn. He wasn't sure it was the right thing to do, but production head Sean Bailey lobbied hard, and they finally decided that having some control by financing this Australian/British/US co-production of the origin story of the "Mary Poppins" movie, "Saving Mr. Banks," was a good idea.

Review: Thompson Triumphs in 'Saving Mr. Banks,' which Adds Spoonful of Sugar to Backstage 'Mary Poppins' Tale (TRAILER)

For 20 years, Walt Disney avidly pursued the film rights to "Mary Poppins," and for 20 years, author P.L. Travers rebuffed the mogul's tenacious advances, fearing the ways he might maul her beloved book and character. This is the tale that "Saving Mr. Banks," which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival and North American premiere at AFI FEST, sets out to tell, interspersed with flashbacks to Travers' own difficult, unexpected childhood in the Australian Outback. Travers is Emma Thompson's best leading film role since Elinor Dashwood in "Sense And Sensibility," 18 years ago, and she makes the Australian-born British transplant a curmudgeonly delight.
