Governor Jerry Brown, Harrison Ford and Anjelica Huston Celebrate Joan Didion at PEN Center USA Awards

PEN Center USA's 23rd annual Literary Awards Festival at the Beverly Hills Hotel was a dazzling mix of literary Los Angeles and Hollywood, as Joan Didion was winning the Lifetime Achievement Award. Many of the 400 or so attendees, from producer Laura Bickford to authors Bret Easton Ellis, A.M. Homes, Cari Beauchamp, Janet Fitch and Michael Tolkin, were disappointed that the diminutive and frail New York writer was not able to attend, after sustaining a fall. Governor Jerry Brown and Harrison Ford had been friends with Didion for some 40 years, and valued her friendship--and sophisticated dinner parties.

'The Expendables 3' Lays Cash on Aging Acting Stars, Starts Production in Bulgaria

Final casting on Lionsgate and Millennium Films' "The Expendables 3," which started filming August 19 on location in Bulgaria and at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia, reveals the depth of the Aging Action Star Demographic. There was a time when some of these guys commanded $20 million a picture, and co-starring in a sprawling ensemble like this marks one of their last available big upfront cash paydays. You know that Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford aren't fantasizing about doing this kind of grinding work any more than is Bruce Willis. He famously exited the series, demanding even more than the $3 million he was offered for four days work.

Tweeter Stallone Exploits Willis vs. Ford Millions To Sell 'Expendables 3'

So Bruce Wills has outraged Sylvester Stallone because he turned down the offer to shoot four days on "The Expendables 3" in Bulgaria for $3 million. "Uh-hh," said Bruce, in a way that has made his reputation on screen, even in "Expendables" pictures. "If it’s four days I want $4 million." The Hollywood Reporter “Insider” was quoted as saying, “I think Willis was pretty surprised he was replaced in 72 hours by Harrison Ford -- a better actor, a much nicer person and a more interesting direction for the film.”

Comic-Con: Lionsgate/Summit Puts on Major 'Divergent' and 'Ender's Game' Push, Deflects Controversy

No question that the high point of Comic-Con so far is the Lionsgate/Summit panel to see a trailer for sci-fi "Ender’s Game" (November 1) which is directed by South African director Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") and aimed at boys, and first-ever footage from young adult "Divergent" (March 21, 2014, IMAX) which is directed by Neil Burger ("Limitless") and aimed at the "Twilight" crowd. Casting is strong on both book adaptations for which Summit harbors high hopes of franchise potential. But it's clear that while the media is aware of Summit's marketing push on these films, the hordes didn't pack into Hall H.
